Posted by: monzagal ()
Date: May 07, 2012 03:55PM

Okay guys lets have some fun. I need a handful of trivia questions relating to all things cars. I give the base car buying briefing and it's geared to 18/19 year old kids....

So for extra prizes and so they don't fall asleep during the briefing I need some trivia questions.

I need about 5.

What Fiberglas car was offered for sale in 1963 that was called " The Six Week Wonder" ?

Answer : Studebaker Avanti

The car was introduced in 1963, but was designed in 6 Weeks. Was made by taking a Studebaker Convertable and lengthening the frame. Was heavily pre-ordered, BUT, there was a curing problem in the first Body run ( fiberglass), and many people got there money refunded and went and bought Corvettes.

Good questions guys. Not sure how advanced those is for today's 18-19 year old minds. Do you want them to have a fighting chance for at least one correct answer? How about something like this...

Q: The camshaft in a four stroke engine turns _____ as fast as the crankshaft.

A: Half

Q: The Ford Mustang was released (unleashed?) to public on April 17th, 19__

A: 64

What company is the largest maker of taxis and trucks?
Ans: Daimler Benz (Mercedes parent)

Why do Americans and Europe drive on right but not the former British Empire?
Ans: Fighting from horseback is more natural on the left (right handed soldiers fight on their right sides). Napoleon wanted a tactical advantage so his army learned to fight on their left sides. (So, Brits drive on left, Continental Europe on right)

What maker produced "The Thing"
Ans: Volkswagen, 1973-4

What's the meaning of "Subaru"
Ans: It's the Japanese name for the star cluster Pleiades, which has six stars. The six stars represent the six companies that came together to make Subaru cars.

What's safer to drive on a snowy day. A four wheel drive car or an identical two wheel drive car?
Ans: According to a Goodyear Tire study, the four wheel drive version of otherwise identical cars has about eight times more crashes when driven in the same winter-weather conditions.

1) The frame on the Avanti was never lengthened. It used a standard Lark convertible frame which had a cross brace while other Larks did not.

2) The VW Thing (i.e., the 181), was built from 1969 until 1983. The car was only sold in the US in 1973 and 1974 because it would not pass new safety requirements.

A Corvair question to use?

What car was the subject of Ralph Nader's book, "Unsafe at Any Speed"?

A: Corvair

What car came with a "Beep, Beep" horn?

A: Plymouth Road Runner

What car was introduced at the 1964 New York World's Fair?

A: Ford Mustang

What two car divisions sold Shelby cars?

A: Ford & Dodge

Very interesting actually. Maybe because people are more confident in the 4WD/AWD cars, so they get themselves in bad situations more often?

@Pacerace: Correct! Goodyear looked at acceleration, braking, and cornering abilities in the science-phase of their study. (Crash rates were actual data).

4wd vs 2wd

Acceleration: 180% more than 2WD
Braking: about 90% vs 2WD
Cornering: about 95% vs 2WD + less predictable with 4WD (FWD or RWD would consistently either understeer or oversteer. 4WD could go either way so less predictable)

4WD gives confidence to either driver faster (with, unfortunately, less braking and cornering ability)
