I have a problem. the bell housing will not come off. I removed the 3 bolts on the flex plate, then removed 5 bolts to the differential housing, but, I assume on the lower of both sides are alignment dowels and that seems to be where the problem is,any suggestions. I have tried working the diff and PG up and down a little, all is loose except at the bottom. Larry Cooper

Ther are two bolts on the very bottom inside those pockets

Did you get the one bolt inside the bell housing air outlet duct on the lower right side?

7 bolts hold the bellhousing to the face of the diff. Look at page 6-11 in the 61 shop manual at Fig 6-19 please, you will see the bolt holes easily.

Dont forget the oil pan bolts.
Three of them bolt to the bell housing.

Larry's first post wasn't quite clear about what he was removing from what but I believe he's separating the bell housing from the differential and that's why I didn't bring up the oil pan bolts. It's possible I have it wrong.

I agree Craig, he didn't mention removing the flex plate (6 bolts) but instead said 3 bolts indicating to me he was loosening the converter and he was trying to separate the engine from the transaxle. I hope the converter stays on the diff, otherwise he will be swimming in Type A. Hopefully he has a shop manual.

Thanks for the info, I was removing the bell housing from the differential,I am glad to know about the pan bolts to the bell housing , I will be doing that soon.
This is my first corvair so I need lots of info, I have been restoring cars for a long time but this is a whole new ballgame. Thanks again, I always appreciate the help.Later I will fill you in on details some of it you'll drool over. Larry

I agree with Matt, don't proceed any further without having the shop manuals at hand. Most of your questions end up being answered by simply reading the manual.

Give us your location too, there may be other owners and club members near by to help. Do you have a local club near you?

Steve replies: You are not helping to find a town nearby where a CORSA member might live. How about an actual town name? I know of clubs in Tulsa and Okla City, you must be around Hext or Delhi and it looks like you are alone out there.

Peruse the manual carefully, many of the questions posed to the forums are easily found by reading the pages.
