Do it your self with Napa part# 48-1697.

That is 79 GMC 292 inline six 1/2 ton pick up.

One year earlier if you prefer remote coil.

Matt is right (again) search HEI...many threads here.

Quick cheap and easy although you do have to modify the turkey roaster for clearance.

Corvair distributor is on the left and as you can see has a longer shaft with different gear location. The second is a 292 point distributor. All inline Chevy distributors have a .030" smaller housing. That would let the distributor gear sit away from the drive gear.

1975 was first year for HEI in the inline six and only year for external coil. Better selection for coils with coil-in-cap. External coil HEI housing has different guide notch for the cap.

How are you guys modifiying the drive gear/oil pump end of the shaft? I can fab the bushing for the housing easy enough. I would think a pinned collar joining the shaft would work after you dealt with indexing the rotor to the drive gear.

..someplace upstairs I've got a box of big-cap HEI's,one V8 housing welded to the Corvair lower IIRC,,and an 'Olds' 231? V6 w/ V8 shaft and Corvair gear,and... indexing the gear with the rotor isn't needed, you turn (time) the housing to get the rotor and cap post right..had pics that Tim Colson took of my engine a few yrs ago, can't find them..someone here got the HEI module mounted externally and triggered by the points..

RICHARD: The rebuilt 79 292 HEI I bought from Napa that is in the racecar right now fit perfect.

We cut the stem off both a Corvair and an HEI distributor.

The attached the Corvair stem to the HEI with a set screw coupling.

We got the female/female set screw coupling at a good hardware store.

We lined both distributors up on TDC #1 then cut and aligned them accordingly.

Again I didn't experience any .030 difference in housing sizes.

I turn down the drive end of the Corvair shaft and drill the HEI shaft to match, align and silver solder.Could drill either shaft since is really doesn't matter as long as its a nice tight fit before joining.

Just an info update. The part number Phil listed should read 84-1697.

Chevy used to offer a shaft extender that they used a roll pin to hold the shafts together with. It had a female slot in one end. They were not intended for this application but it was the correct length.

I am still learning about distributors on the Corvair. There is, indeed a difference in the housing size where it drops into the housing. The Corvair is larger there and the GM 6 - as well as the other replacements are smaller. If someone here is capable and interested in making a shouldered bushing, in steel, aluminum or a Thermo-setting plastic, I would be interested in buying a dozen of them, maybe more. I have modified the MSD inline 6 and supplied some of them to racers for that application. I can supply a drawing. - Seth Emerson

You're talking about this shaft. Some people say this coupling came from Chevrolet, but I'm not one of them. It looks more like a repair or adaption to me.
This HEI came out of a '75 Nova and has the external coil, but I have pulled other external coil HEI's and they had the standard one piece shaft.
For those wanting to use a junkyard HEI, be aware that some Buick and Olds 250 engines used an HEI with .025" smaller lower section of the shaft. On the 230-250-292 inline six the distributor runs in a replaceable bushing in the bottom of the block.
