How to remove ignition without the key?
Posted by: deebee ()
Date: March 03, 2012 05:57PM

Will not go to the lock position without the key, therefore sticking a pin in the hole will not work.
Do I drill? If so, where? Would prefer to do the job with dash in place.
Thanks

You must have a working key in order to get the cylinder out of the housing. (Unless you have picks and know where to drill for the side bar)

The cylinder must be removed from the housing in order to get the trim ring (retainer nut/bezel) to thread off so the switch can come out without damaging anything.

IF you know the ignition key is different than the doors you are pretty much out of luck. IF the door key was/is the same as the ignition I would suggest taking the passenger side door cylinder out and look for a four digit code number and have a "Key by code" made at a local Locksmith.

IF getting a working ignition key is not an option, you may need to remove the switch by unscrewing the trim ring (retainer/nut bezel) with the cylinder intact. This will more than likely damage the trim ring and the cylinder. Once the trim ring has been removed you can remove the switch assembly from the dash and replace it or again take it to a local Locksmith and ask them to either remove the cylinder for you or make a key but replacing it would be the better option at that point.

If you want the ignition to work on a specific key, buy an uncombinated cylinder and have it keyed to match the key (or key code) you want.

IF the car is a late model there are no other options. If it is an early with the switch in the removable part of the dash, it would be possible to remove the dash and take it to the Locksmith. Good luck with reaching your goal.

take a small screwdriver and pry out the key hole cover(the little round plate with the little hole, that covers the cylinder) once you pry it out the bezel will unscrew (counter clock wise) completely and then you can pull the swich out of the dash backwards (towards windshield) you can then unplug the switch from the wiring.you can then decide to replace lock cylinder or entire assy. there are other ways to do this but will damage other parts.
you can then get a replacement lock cylinder with a key
put switch back in dash, tighten bezel and put in the new key cylinder.

Its not that hard to drill out the cylinder, but of course the cylinder will be ruined. The trick is to not damage the switch, controlling the depth of the drill is the key to that. Make sure the car is in neutral or disconnect the battery.
Since I dont have a hundred Corvair keys like others do, drilling is usually my only option. I drill straight into the cylinder in the center where the key goes in, starting with a 3/16 bit, once to the correct depth, I enlarge the hole a few sixteenths at a time until I have totally destroyed the cylinder, the remnants of the cylinder housing can be pulled out of the switch. Then another key cylinder can be inserted into the switch, a little vacuum action on the carpet and life is good.
This operation will feel a little barbaric and crude, but it does work.

Thanks one and all
Forgot to mention that it is an early, but it appears that it doesn't matter.
Strange, even my parts car dash is showing the same symptom. The key works for the door and trunk but not the ignition. Both sets of keys will not go to lock.
Looks like I will be having to destroy one ignition and replacing it with one that is keyed.
OR as Matt suggests, ask all of the members to bring a key to the next club meeting.

If you get everything apart send me a key and I will make an early tumbler to the code of the key so you can use one key for all like you are supposed to.

I got one out of an EM dash recently by taking a pair of pliers to the key "lips" and forcing it around until it broke off. Then I was able to get the retaining ring off and the switch out of the dash. The lock was still stuck in the switch so I just set it aside and used another spare.

I forgot to add that I have "jiggler keys" to try plus I have a ring of old keys to try also.

Matt and Kens responses are the best, least costly and car friendliest versions to use.

o.

Once you find a key to open the ignition lock, its easy to remove and bring to the locksmith. done that more than once.

You would think the engineers would have enough sense to design the retaining ring/bezel so it would unscrew over the switch without needing to remove the inner guts first. But then I was an engineer and I probably made similar mistakes!
