Corvair Center Timing oddity Posted by:

() Date: February 19, 2012 11:32PM So, car died and I got towed home last week. I was able to keep it running, albeit poorly, by advancing the timing; until I was hitting the coil and couldn't advance anymore. To get it running from the street and into my workplace, I tried pulling the plug wires in the coil and moving them one place to the right (counter clockwise), and moving the distributor so the #1 was coming out slightly advanced of where it was when I ran out of adjustment. RUNS! (a little rough) Now the elbow of the vacuum advance is pointed at the fan belt, just like my FC's, but the timing marks are wayyyy advanced, barely visible on the right side of the pulley. I've had to advance timing over the months to make the car run. What's going on? 1963 80hp PG, petronix, riveted pulley. another thing that may be correct or not; wiring to coil through resistor wire 5vdc motor off/key on, 9vdc motor running. Also noticed continuity from the "switched" brown wire and ground (goes to resistor wire in harness connection). Isolated this continuity to ground to the brown wire; resistor wire does not have continuity to ground with wiring harness unplugged. Re: Timing oddity Posted by:

() Date: February 20, 2012 12:12AM Or sadly the camshaft gear is slipping. Do you know how to find TDC ? check that the piston is at top...when HB is showing 0 degrees.. () Date: February 20, 2012 05:25AM I'll do a thorough checking of TDC and stuff as time permits. Supposed to be 70 here this week, so I'll have no weather excuses. I'm going to pour through the shop manuals and catalogs to see what I'm looking for. I take it the pins in the drive gear are going to be an easier fix than a slipping camshaft gear. () Date: February 20, 2012 05:30AM Yes Bill Dist. gear is on dist.! It should come out with the dist. Approx. 1/16" pin.... available at hardware stores.. () Date: February 20, 2012 05:34AM Hooray! That means it won't be something so simple however; Murphy's Law. Anymore, I expect the worse case scenario. Re: Timing oddity Posted by:

() Date: February 20, 2012 07:37AM Is that the Pert I or Pert II? If it is the Pert II, suggest you go back to points and see how it works. Sure cured some of my problems. The Pert II has got to have 12volts to the coil, and if you're idling a bit low, it won't get 12 volts. () Date: February 20, 2012 02:11PM Try a points dizzy. We had the same thing happen to a club member. When he left home(about 1 1/2 hours away) the car was running ok but not good. When he arrived, car would barely run with pertronix. switched back to points and timing came back and car ran like a new one.I dont remeber if it was ignitor 1 or II but think it was II. () Date: February 20, 2012 04:31PM this has happened with both points and pertronix. Re: Timing oddity Posted by:

() Date: February 20, 2012 04:45PM I had a Pertronix 1 also, bypassed the resistance wire and still had problems, went back to points. Greg Miller Eugene, Oregon ![]() Re: Timing oddity Posted by:

() Date: February 20, 2012 06:41PM Pertronix don't like to be run on the 6V from the resistance wire. If you suspect it's the problem the only way to check will be to swap in another unit. () Date: February 20, 2012 08:03PM have you tried running a 12 volt wire from the battery to the coil to see if that solved your problem? Re: Timing oddity Posted by:
surlyoldbill
() Date: February 20, 2012 08:10PM Just so we don't get pulled away from the timing issue into a pertronix discussion, I have done the "correct" 12v wiring of the pertronix, my hesitation and advance symptoms exist with or without pertronix. And my tires have the correct amount of inflation. ![]() Re: Timing oddity Posted by:

() Date: February 20, 2012 09:03PM SUPER SUCCESS! Took out the dist, and the pin was sheared off. Thanks to everyone for their tips! After pulling the pan and removing the cap, I noticed the rotor was not turning as I wrenched the pully, it spunn freely by hand. Pulled out the dist and the gear had climbed up about 1" or so from it's proper position, and the pin WAS sheared. Fixing as we speak. Re: Timing oddity Posted by:
