The 1965 Corvair Monza Spyder - ever see one?
Date: December 27, 2011 05:25PM

I've had the October 1964 copy of Car and Driver around for decades, but never really closely examined the picture on the cover.
I'm going to paint my "new" 1965 Monza convertible back to original Sierra Tan, and remembered this picture on the cover. Looking at it now I see it is a "Monza Spyder" !!
Obviously Chevrolet saw the value of continuing the name Spyder for the high-performance versions of the Corvair, but for some reason changed their mind and went with an unknown name of "Corsa"
I wonder how that decision was arrived at? Strange what might have been...
How do you like those Kelsey Hayes chrome wire wheels??

We've seen the "Spyder 180" decal for the air cleaners of late model turbos, but here is a complete pilot car badged as a "Spyder"

My convertible is a 140 4 speed, and thinking about it, really - what difference is there between my Monza and a 140 Corsa, except the instrument panel and the silver cove?
Someone has already added the "console" housing around the shifter base in mine. I'm going to put a silver painted Corsa instrument set in there. I'm thinking I might get a couple of "Spyder" nameplates and cut the pins off, recess mount a few cobalt magnets in the back and stick 'em on below the Monza cross. That should be interesting at a car show!

I think someone has made a "Monza Spyder" clone.. I recall seeing some pics of it here... I'll have to search.

I love the Sierra Tan color too. My Dad's '65 Monza sedan with 140 4-speed was this color. The car always looked classy. thumbs up
But I don't think that pilot car represents Sierra Tan. looks too orangie. It looks more like Aztec Bronze which was available later in '66.

That was the original Color of my Convertible. I really like it but it will not go with my light blue interior. I am doing a color change to silver or light gunmetal.
