Any valve spring compressor has an adjustment, tighten it down some more and slide the keepers in.

Yup. I use an overhead cam valve spring tool. Not as easy to use as the big clamp ones with the head off. However, they come in VERY handy replacing broken valve springs with the head on. Fill the cylinder up with rope (leaving the end out so you can pull it out. CAREFULLY turn the enigine over until the rope keeps the valve from moving. Works great. grinning smiley

You do have one don't you?

As far as the best? Not sure you want the real answer!

Lyle works very simple, but any "C" type should work very well if you have the head off.

You need a small valve spring compressor tool that will let you collapse the spring and allow you to slip the keepers in place.

I use the same one as 4carbcorvair. works fine. once you think you've got it tight, give it a little more and the keepers are easier to get in. It helps to wear some gloves...

I have used the lever one for the V-8 engines. You have to get a little creative with the fulcrum point but it is quick and simple.

I use a simple lever tool sold by Lisle. It fastens to the lower head stud/rocker arm stand and pushes the valve spring/retainer downward.

EDIT for this afterthought: Since you have the heads on the car you must use something to hold the valve in place while depressing the retainer/spring. I use air but a common sash cord will work too.

Put some grease on the keepers, it will keep them from falling off when you release the spring compressor.

I have the same one as DaveMotoHead, picked it up at a swap meet for $10. It works good and it allows you to give the aluminum retainers a whack, as the keepers tend to bite into them. To fix that I had a bunch of hardcoated titanium retainers machined up. They're not quite as light as aluminum, but are 3 times as tough.

I have used the one like Ronnie shows for 30 years. No rope, no air for Corvairs.

No grease on the keepers, just pull back on the tool when turning the knob to release.

I do use an 8oz ball peen hammer to tap (not hammer with all my might) the top of the valve if the keepers are stock with varnish. I also tap the tool when it is in place.

Here's a home-made one that I've used for years. Works like a charm with heads on or off.....

Just make one... surely you know someone with a welder.

Any Chevy stamped rocker will work for this
