Does Stabil work in Ethanol fuels?
Posted by: afvair ()

I was encouraging a friend at work who is putting his car away for winter too, to make sure he puts some "Stabil" in his gas tank before storage. He told me that he just found out that Stabil does not work in the new gasolines that have Ethanol in them.
Anyone know for sure. He says to use this:

There is a Sta-Bil product just for ethanol blended fuels. smiling smiley
It slows down the phase conversion that can occur when stored.
Frequently used in marine applications. I use it on my boat.

gmorphan is correct - look for Sta-bil Marine. It's formulated for ethanol blended fuels, as boats have a similar issue as our cars do ... ethanol attacking the rubber fuel lines.

Or just go with the good ole Sta-bil Ethanol treatment. Not sure what the difference between the Ethanol treatment and the marine ethanol treatment is.

I used some of the marine stabil...added some a few weeks ago before we got 12" of snow, I have run it several time since, and may be my imagination...but I swear the car is firing up better than before. You don't need much of it either...I'll have to look into the ethanol one that Ronnie is talking about too...wondering if it wouldn't hurt to run that one more frequently...

Jay - it's a misconception that ethanol "attacks rubber fuel lines". A study found that only the cheapy rubber parts used in 80's cars have a problem. All modern fuel lines are not affected by ethanol (of course any flexible fuel line will deteriorate with age). In fact a test of the GM rubber compound used for fuel system parts during the 60's showed it was resistant to ethanol.

Of course any rubber part from the 60's is too old to use safety now.

Any rubber fuel system part should be replaced after ten years and few do it, then when the old part quits they blame ethanol.

and in my cheapy chainsaw!!! sad smiley

My corvairs have had (knock on wood) no problems with modern gas.

I still hate ethanol in my gas though. I think it's all around bad.

the entire ethanol additive programm would fall apart if it werent for government subsidies to the refiners. Some gas pumps have a sticker that says:"Enriched with ethanol"...That makes me laugh! the sticker should say: "Diluted with ethanol"!

Here's what I bought. Treats 80 gallons, cost $12, I think. It's the only size WW had...

The same size StaBil cost $6, and treat 20 gallons. A larger original Stabil cost $11, and treats 80 gallons, so much cheaper to buy the jumbo size. 4 times as much, double the price

That's what I have....$10 I think at Advance Auto. About the rubber hoses though...my fill line and vent line rubber hoses both were fine when I got the car...after the first year (several fillups - 8k miles) I had holes in both mine by the following springtime. I'm sure they were old hoses, but they were fine at first, so I remain skeptical about any 'proof' that the ethanol is harmless. Not to mention how fast the stuff turns to turpentine too...
