That part of the pan is the bell housing. There is a partition in the pan that I welded yesterday.
This morning I painted the final color of the engine parts. Still had a little time left over while the pig cooked and before the wine tasting, so I polished the intake manifold. That will at least make it look faster. Amazing what you can do in a couple pf spare hours.
Then sprayed diesel on the front cross member so I can pressure wash it tomorrow and finish painting all the suspension parts. Unfortunately it is welded in place. Doesn't just bolt in like a Vair.

Here is a front spindle after turning on the lathe
And one of the new bushings/sleeves the machine shop made for it. Hopefully the grease will spread nicely through that bushing.

Richard, you make it look so easy! I've always like the Dauphine. My Dad had a tiny one in his HO train layout when I was a kid...

Well, after giving up on my gas gauge this morning, I turned to the Renault. Grabbed a neighbor, tied a fire hose around the engine and an old pole, and we lifted the engine out. Three hours later I had a pile of parts. An hour more to pressure clean. Tomorrow I'll put the brass brush on the grinder and work on some of the rust and stuff that wouldn't come off with water pressure.
Apparently it really had been rebuilt shortly before abandoning. The pistons and jugs look new except for rust in one cylinder. I may be able to save it. Need to take it to the machine shop Monday. But lots of carbon in the heads. probably due to the VW carburetor. I'll have to find a Renault carb. The clutch plate also looks like it was new, but 25 years in the mud does its toll.
Rod bearings are new (+.25) and the main bearings have been filled in and turned.
From the looks at the water chambers and pump, they never used antifreeze.

I took an hour Friday evening and a couple yesterday morning to finish stripping the Renault, dropping the gas tank and rear suspension, trans, dif, etc.
The oil in the trans looks and smells fresh, but appears to be a SAE 250.

People around here think that thicker is better. I guess it was good for the 25 year "storage" in the mud.
I now have a third set of jack stands. I had to pull the tires out from under the middle to drop the trans, and I only had four stands. Wanted something "just in case"

Today I took apart the differential to clean it up and paint it. A nice little surprise inside.
While straightening the oil pan I noticed that it had two cracks in it, and being the first day of a 4 day holiday, I broke my 40 year streak of not welding, finding it easier to find the equipment to borrow than find a non-drunk welder. So a little while later I had it ready and treated with Rust Reformer.
Then on to priming the transmission, differential, block and everything else of the power train. Tomorrow morning while the pig cooks I'll be painting these green. Yea, the band looks funny, but was the only thing I found that could keep the sweat out of my eyes.

I don't think they ever get lubed. They were toasted on my old Dauphine.

Richard,you motivated me to go out and put a alternator in one of my 85eldorados.Has a bad bearing a could not find a rebuild kit so I got the whole alternator and put it in.Nothing compared to what you do I know,your good!
