Diff gears: tallest available?
Posted by: Brad54 ()

Is 3.08 the tallest gear available for Corvairs, or where there any 2-series gears available, such as 2.92 or 2.73?

3.08 is the lowest ratio... and your wagon most likely won't like it.

It seems I remember someone made up some 4.11 sets a long time ago. There may be some still floating about. Butttt thats in the opposite direction you are looking!
The 3.08 was the tallest.
Another solution....Bus Tires and a nudge to get rolling!

The PO of my car put a 3.08 in it.

I wish it had a 3.55 or even 3.89. I like 0-60, and I don't care about fuel economy in this car (the PO did).

If anybody has a set of 3.08s they're tired of tripping on, I'd be more than happy to give them a good home!

3.08 is the highest ration, 3.55 the lowest factory for LM, 3.89 lowest factory for EM. 3.08s are becoming like hen's teeth but 3.27s are still available.

Taller rear tires are another way to get lower RPM at cruising speed. They'd be offset by their higher weight and inertia, though.

GM did offer a short run of 3.89 to 1 for the Yenko Stinger option. I know of at least one set (used) for sale by a Stinger owner.

best wishes, Steve

Actually, New 3.08s are in stock at Clarks Click here. The new gears are double drilled so they will fit either an early (6-bolt) or a late (9-bolt) carrier.

I've built two 3.08 transaxles lately. The keys to success are a transmission with a 3.65 first gear (61-3 4-sp or 61L-65 FC 4-sp) and an engine with good bottom end torque. With those factors in place you get a fabulous transaxle.

Steve Goodman runs a 3.08 that he combined with a 61E FC trans (4.26 first) which is great for stop and go traffic. If anyone is interested, I wrote an article about the 3.08 mod and it was published in the Communique.
