() Date: March 04, 2012 01:22PM I am planning on unbolting the top as a complete assembly. Is this possible? I then want to fold it up and build an OSB crate for it. I think I want it to breath, so I might drill some 2" holes in the crate. What can I cover these openings with to keep the mice out? Aluminum window screen? I know they chew through anything. I have to give it some more thought. Since the dang thing runs so good, I am going to get some mufflers on it and drive it a little to make sure everything is okay, and to hopefully show it off at our next local Corvair club meeting. _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: New Build: Project "Corsa GTP Convertible" ![]() Posted by:

() Date: April 29, 2012 09:05AM I have made some progress lalety, not a ton, as I still have a few things to button up in the kitchen, but the warm weather has me playing out in the barn instead. I got the 140 in the Corsa running pretty good with the single 4 barrel it has on it, and drove the car top down to our local club meeting a week or so ago so everyone in the club could get a glimpse at it becuase it might not see the light of day for several years now! Several funny comments, like "whats wrong with it?" "Nothing, all it needs is a passenger seat and a few chrome do-dads!" _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited 1 time(s). () Date: April 29, 2012 09:11AM So yesterday a few of my Corvair buds were over and we worked on Ridderman's race motor that didn't seem to run right, after we got that sorted out I decided it was time to tear the Corsa apart. Although Matt claims to be able to remove a Corvair motor in 11 minutes, we drank lots of beer and tried to be methodical in the powertrain removal, and it took an hour or two. After that we removed the front suspension. Now I need to remove the heating system and the cross member, then set the shell on a body dolly so it can be wheeled out of the way until the next work session! Time to get the tape measure out and see just how this is all going to work. _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Attachments: ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: New Build: Project "Corsa GTP Convertible" ![]() Posted by:

() Date: April 29, 2012 09:13AM I need to tidy up the shop a little today, things are a little big scattered. Here are some pics of the 140 drive train which runs awesome and the front suspension, both of which will probably end up in my '65 Sedan. _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Attachments: ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: New Build: Project "Corsa GTP Convertible" ![]() Posted by:

() Date: June 24, 2012 07:11PM Spent part of the day today working on the GTP. Got the manual 6 speed bolted to the engine (It Fits!) and then started looking at what I am going to do to hold the complete motor/trans in place while engineering crossmembers and motor mounts. Since I will need the motor mount locations clear, and because I can't use a chain from overhead, I made a small cradle that bolts to the center of the engine and trans in 5 places, and this cradle bolts to my HF adjustable transmission holding platform. The adjusting screw for the transmission jack platform is very bent, along with the pivot rod, so I will fab some new ones tomorrow at work. Hopefully with a ratchet strap around the entire thing it will be stable enough on the jack or engine crane to get the engine into the proper location. _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Attachments: Re: New Build: Project "Corsa GTP Convertible" ![]() Posted by:

() Date: June 24, 2012 07:15PM Also finished removing the interior and took the convertible top off the car for safe keeping. Hopefully tomorrow I will have my transmission jack back together and can start alternating between the shoe horn and magic wand trying to get this puppy in there. _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Attachments: Re: New Build: Project "Corsa GTP Convertible" ![]() Posted by:

() Date: June 24, 2012 07:34PM Wish I had one of those 20 lb plastic engine and trans mockups the pros use...I also "skinny-ed" up the engine by removing the power steering pump, and also the A/C compressor, all the wiring, and all the EGR stuff. If/when I put the A/C compressor back on, it will have to be relocated to the back side of the engine where there is unlimited space. _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: New Build: Project "Corsa GTP Convertible" ![]() Posted by:

() Date: June 30, 2012 05:55PM I ended up hacking quite a bit more than that. Little by little until I had the motor where I want it. The back seat is still 100% in its original position, and its looking really good for keeping it there. I have spent all day today trying different combinations of engine angle in order to get the axles to be somewhat close enough for the CV joints, while keeping it low enough in the car to clear the convertible top when down, while keeping some respectable ground clearance. After all this, I have settled on tipping the engine about 10 degrees towards the rear of the car. This lines up my axles very nicely, gives me about 4" of ground clearance at the worse point (My V8 car is much much worse with about 2" at the worse point and I have never scrapped anything) Before I run the car I will pull off the oil pan and make sure the oil pickup is going to be okay to pickup oil at this angle or I will modify it to make it happen. It looks like I will be moving the firewall behind the backseat forward about 2" but that will not affect where the seat is, as there is a 2" dead space behind the back seat. This will give me some room for the headers and heat insulation. Custom swing arms will be built using coilover shocks mounted behind the axle since I had to hack up the pass side upper spring mount to clear the supercharger ![]() _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited 1 time(s). () Date: July 19, 2012 04:38PM Here are a few teaser pictures of my motor mounts, I will use some sort of rubber to isolate the engine from the cradle. The cradle is all aluminum, 2" x 3" extruded 6063 .25" wall rectangular aluminum tubing. Will post pics of it when I get it finished, probably Sunday. _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Attachments: ![]() ![]() Re: New Build: Project "Corsa GTP Convertible" ![]() Posted by:

() Date: July 22, 2012 10:35AM So I met my goal, I wanted to have the engine hanging from the car with no support from the floor jack by this weekend, and its in! I will have to remove it again sometime and finish welding the aluminum cradle, but now at least I can put it back on the body dolly and free up my hoist for some other cars! 1st pic is a 1/4" steel plate bracket to mount the trans to the cradle. _________________________________________ Ryan Counterman (Moderator) 1965 Corsa Kelmark V8 ///1965 Monza Sedan 110/PG /// Ultimate Corvair Hauler/// Don Eichstaedt's 1965 Corsa Racecar West Michigan Corvair Club /// 1966 Corsa GTP Convertible Mid Engine 3.8L Supercharged ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Attachments: Re: New Build: Project "Corsa GTP Convertible" ![]() Posted by:
