instructions for newbies on "wrapped" vs the other belt
Posted by: nnsquared ()

Many times over the past 4 years I have read the advice? But think about the person who knows very little about the model. How would someone new to Corvair forum and Corvairs identify a wrapped belt and what ever other kinds of belts are sold by FLAPS and our vendors? Part #?, label that says wrapped? photo of the two or more construction techniques? How many ways are there?

Good point! We have some internal lingo that not everybody knows. Also, many Corvair owners that come to this forum do not have a lot of mechanical knowledge and experience.

I've spent many hours recently researching other cars that I am working on, including Volvo.
We Corvair owners are fortunate that our cars are simpler than newer cars, and that there are not too many unique parts with weird names. The names Volvo uses for "their" parts are downright hilarious! Not intuitive. Try finding a part that you can't possibly guess the right name for. ;-}

It's very simple...

A "wrapped belt" has a fabric feel and look to it..

Unwrapped looks / feels like rubber... no mistaking either..

Generally I refer to part numbers if giving advice. In this case the GATES 3VX560 is the typical belt of choice. It is NOT wrapped but added descriptions may have the tendency to 'muddy the waters' and may only confuse a new owner.

NOTE: use of words 'generally' and 'typical' and 'may' please.

I just threw the Steve Goodman 3Vx560 belt on my '68 95hp autocross motor - it fits wonderfully in the pulley, and everything lines up really well - not any real miles on it yet, but time will tell...

Steve cringes: Darn it Eric, don't say 'just threw' when in reality you should have said 'just installed'. Just kidding let everyone know how it works.

FWIW the orange buggy at the convention autox lost his belt of unknown origin after the first run and I handed him a 3VX560 and he installed it and ran the other runs including his backward escapade. I hope you have good luck with it.

Thanks Steve - correction to my post - just INSTALLED - the 3VX560...funny slip of words.

I have a couple NOS belts too..,,but new is always better. I have a Goodyear Gatorback belt on one of the cars (cant remember which), and it seems to run ok, but is a bit short.

I guess that the reason for the crasy names is that they are probably translated from swedish by some guy who speaks Swedish as his native language (like me).
- This is a "insugsrörspackning". What is the right word for it in english, maybe intake manifold gasket, he might be thinking.

Finding the right word is often difficult when you try to speak a foreign language, and it is even more difficult when it comes to technical expressions.

Otto Parts came up with the Otto Parts Super Belt. I had opportunities to talk to Blake Swafford back then. He did reseaurch on the belts that Gates Co. made for the Corvair. I later,, after Blake passed away had a chance to talk with Gates at their headquarters.
Dayco and Gates apparently made the OEM belts for Corvairs. The differance is the position and construction of the inner cords... to handle the 90 degree bend put on Corvair belts when installed.
Gates actually still makes this belt. It was special labeled for Otto as the Super Belt but I can still buy them from Gates products suppliers. The correct identification is the "Gates Super HC 3V560". You need to use the complete description indicated or you will not get the right belt. This one is the correct wrapped belt. I have had really great success with them for 30+ YEARS and some avid autocrossers swear by these belts.

Worth a look-try.

Dave, most of us use the standard 3V560 with great long term results...

The HC 3V560 might be the ticket for racers....

Also,,here is the wrong thicker belt even with the top of the pully,,just waiting to flip over and fall off,,the proper belt rides lower in the grove and stays put!thumbs up
