OT Replacing AC compressor on 85 Eldorado

Yeah,Im still working on this AC compressor, however I am almost done.Hopefully tomorrow I can evacuate the system and then recharge it on Sunday. All the conversion to 134a has been done and its finally ready after needing to repair a hose that had a gash in it which is probably what caused all this to start with. Im so happy to finally be able to drive the car, because I had to change all the belts and I also flushed the radiator and changed the lower radiator hose since I had to remove to get to some of the bolts for the belts.

Wouldn't it have been easier to pull the engine out of the Eldorado, then change the compressor and put it in one of your Corvairs? smiling smiley

If the engine is a HT4100 don't forget bars leak pellets when refilling the cooling system.

Are you planning on E100 oil? It's the way to go unless you have flushed the system with refrigeration-flush. PAG oil doesn't get along well with residual mineral oil from the R12.

Isn't that a new pump? I didn't say how much and what oil was in it?

PAG oil is intolerant of mineral oil (especially used oil residue because it contains chlorides from prior use) and chloride coatings on the inside of aluminum tubing (aluminum chloride from exposure to R12, which contains chlorine).

PAG oil will break down in short order (like a month), first darkening and then leaving a gooey residue. PAG oil is also contaminated by R141a and R11 flushing refrigerants.

You can take a chance - folks do get away with things sometimes - or you can pull the compressor, drain and flush, and install the proper amount of E100. Did you pour some of the oil into your new accumulator too? If so, that should be drained and flushed or replaced toosad smiley
