Harmonic balancer pinning?
Posted by: Ratt643 ()

Just read an article in Chevy High Performance magazine where they added a supercharger to an engine. They pinned the harmonic balancer to keep it from rotating. Wonder if this would help out our older balancers that have given up just yet?

I would suspect if you do, the HB wouldn't serve it's purpose but rather be a one piece steel rotating. Others have done it, but I wouldn't.

For the amount of trouble it is to pin (pins need to be press fit on the inner part and clearance on the outer part or it wont be a harmonic balancer, it would just be a pully) you might as well just buy a rebuilt one and be done with it.

I think I'd just get a rebuilt HB from Dale or another fine rebuilder instead of defeating the purpose of the HB in the first place.

Pinning a bad balancer is an unsound proposition.

Confused.... I must be out of touch with the current breed of chevy motors....

Why would you need to pin the HB if they are installing a blower?
Are the running a serpentine belt that drives off of the main belt drive?

in my experience blowers were always driven off of a separate pulley that is bolted to the hub of the h/b. Even my 2000 Pontiac GTP has a separate pulley and serpentine belt drive for the blower.

Good thing too as one of the idler/tensionsers for the blower seized and fragged the belt while I was driving. Didn't notice there was a problem until i felt the lack of performance. At fist I attributed it to using the wrong gas (87 vs 91, did that once before by mistake) but then noticed no boost on the gauge.

the main belt was still in place driving all the other accessories.

Yea I am with Marco I don't get it?

The drive for my Judson mounts to the pulley so there is no way for it to spin.

I also agree. Pinning defeats the purpose. I think perhaps the Chevy HP article had a dumb dumb point in it. The only other reason for pinning that I could think of, is if there was not enough clearance to have the double belt pulley.

ratt643 I believe you misunderstood what you were reading. They were probably talking about the later model LSx engines. Those engines do not have a crankshaft slot and key for the balancer. They were pinning the balancer to the crankshaft.

I would have thought Summit would have the kit, but I could not find it. Here is one from another outfit.

Richard, you may be correct. It is for the LS engines and they(CHP) did not specify what they where pinning. Marco, it is a serpentine HB that they are running the blower off of, I would say there is no room for an extra pulley. A new balancer it is! Thanks All!

Yeah, I was going to say pin the HUB of the HB to the crankshaft to keep it from shearing from the extra torque from running a supercharger. Was also wondering if they might want to pin the hub of the HB to the blower pulley for added strength.
