What 's the value of a running 180 Turbo motor?
Posted by: Matt E. ()

I just picked up a rust bucket '65 Corsa the previous owner could not get to run. I pulled the power pack to discover that it was only a bad starter. It fired right up, I need to address a bad oil pan leak before I run it for too long, but it does run! I really purchased the car for other goodies on it and plan to sell the engine to recoup some of my investment.
I did a search and found a lot about 110, 140 hp values, but couldn't find much on a Turbo. Within the last 6 months I sold a 140 through Ebay locally for just under $1000. Would I be correct in assuming that a running 180 might bring that much or more?
One other question...it has no engine code stamp-does that mean it had a replacement block at some point and would this effect value much?

I pulled a 140 out of a Corsa last year that had no code either. Every once in a while you run across one that never got stamped. The 140 had all of the 'specific' parts as well. Check the end of your crank for the '&'.

I would think at least $1500... make a video of it running put it on Youtube and embed in your ad on ebay

I sold a good 140 that way last year for close to $1500 and the buyer paid another $300 to ship!

Whatever someone is willing to pay.

I picked up a 140 last year with a trailer load, of parts for $100.

It's whatever someone is willing to pay, and you are willing to except. Finding the right person at the right time.

Try $2000. If someone shows an interested, you can always drop the price for a quick sale.

it depends on how well it runswinking smiley My engine ran on 4 cylindersconfused smiley

it's hard to tell how strong an engine is on the garage floor. I'd do a compression check.if it is quiet with good compression it is worth at very least a grand.

A few years ago I sold a turbo drivetrain for $1800, everything from the clutch pedal to the tail pipe. Buyer took the car for a test ride first, liked it, gave me a deposit, a week later he came by and picked up the whole shebang.

If I was in the market to BUY a 180 engine, I would be looking real hard at the condition of the turbo unit, carburetor and engine itself. Saving $500 on the purchase price, then finding the turbo and/or carb needs rebuilding at a cost of $1k or more is false economy. This is one good reason why I have resisted buying a turbo Corvair so far.

Matt, with your skills, I expect you will check this unit out pretty well and assess what is good/bad about it. Whoever buys it should at least know what they are getting. What are you going to do with the rest of the car? Is it really that bad?
I emailed the seller the day the ad went up, and he did not respond to me until after you bought it. You are one fine horse--I mean Corvair trader! winking smiley
