() Date: July 31, 2011 02:52AM Things that make you go hmmm..... I'm sure it's been around before, first time I've seen it. I didn't write it, just some thing someone sent me..... In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day." The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment." She was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day. In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks. But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day. Back then, they washed the baby's diapers because they didn't have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right, they didn't have the green thing back in her day. Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right, they didn't have the green thing back then. They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But they didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. Isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were, just because they didn't have the green thing back then? WOW!!!!! () Date: July 31, 2011 05:00AM Seen your post somewhere else the other day, does make one think and to make everyone think. I work as a pilot on the Ohio River. When I first started working,15 years ago, every high water you would see unbeleivable amounts of styrofome, not so much now. The unbeleivables now is plastic drink bottles and plastic containers in general. The old plumbers rule- everything goes downhill and after that it ends up in the river. Sam C. Saunders,Pt. () Date: July 31, 2011 02:30PM Re: the tv's... Good point about the power uaage. But what about at end of life more or less toxic petroleum basednparts and heavy metals to into the ground and into the water tables? I know in Ca we now have a electronics disposal fee, similar to the CRV fee, but I think all that money is going to "comitee" to see what can be done to reduce electronics going to landfills. They were also buying electronics, similar to aluminum cans etc, and giving 5¢ a pound but i have not seen as much lately. I truely hope that they can and do recycle the old electronics and not just ship them off to other regions of the world to be dumped in the desert, the forests or rivers. Outta site and outa mind is good way to recycle. Marco A 2nd Gen Monza Wagon, a 2nd Gen GB 8door, a 2nd Gen (61's were 1st Gen) R/s and a 62nd Gen Turbo coupe.. () Date: July 31, 2011 05:04PM I remember the milkman delivering milk in recyclable glass jugs. Some say I look a lot like him!gggg I also remember 8 16 ounce glass bottles of pop with a deposit that were reused over and over. It wasn't me the consumer that had a problem being green it was someone else. Told my collage attending son about the whole reusing glass bottles back in the day thing and he didn't believe me! He had to google it. Re: O/T: Are we "greener" now or were we "greener" then? Posted by:

() Date: July 31, 2011 06:06PM Back in the mid '60s, my sole job at "Piggly Wiggly" was correlating the right glass bottles into the proper Wooden cases (Yes, WOODEN) so they could be recycled. Soda pop bottles were going for 2 cents a pop back then and some people brought them in by the grocery cart full and scored 4 or 5 WHOLE DOLLARS!!! ggg Yeah, we were 'Green' and didn't even know it! () Date: July 31, 2011 07:04PM When someone ordered a 'case' of soda it was 24 7 1/2 oz. bottles in a wooden crate. My job at the Grand Union was to sort the empties, did u know every Coke bottle was stamped on the bottom where it had been made! We had a map on the wall and turned over every empty to find the one that came farthest away from Long Island! Not only did we have a milk man, a bakery truck came by and gradma brought out a plate upon which the fellow dropped the baked goods on- no plastic, no aluminum trays, nothing that would make a recycling bin necessary! When your knives (and tools) were dull, a man in a truck sharpened them, now we buy new. Re: O/T: Are we "greener" now or were we "greener" then? Posted by:

() Date: July 31, 2011 07:44PM This is not politically correct!! ggg! SURE we did!! Every now and then, I wanted to be the Indian, or the Robber, cause I was pretty dramatic in 'Dying'. I even had a mattel gun that would fire plastic projectiles if you put a Greenie-stickum cap on the back of the shell. And yes, Dave, my grandma lived in the Ozarks of Missouri and heated and cooked over a wood stove. Out house out back. Drew water from the well. (This all as late as the early 60's) EVERYONE had a chore or 2 no matter how young. I knew of NO obese or over weight kids back in my youth. Couldn't hardly get us inside the house at dark cause we were having so much fun runnin around! Even (Gasp) drank water from garden hoses! Re: O/T: Are we "greener" now or were we "greener" then? () Date: July 31, 2011 08:35PM It's interesting when my Grandchildren come to visit they don't understand that we drink water. Then we drink water out of the faucet. Are we insane? Some of the Green movement is common sense - a very small amount of it are new ideas that are good - A great deal of it is smoke and mirrors and marketing or grabs for political power. I mused about 10 years ago in an Commentary that we would soon have environmental "actuaries". Now we do - it's called "carbon credits". () Date: August 01, 2011 04:40PM When we were kids we didn't have "Play Dates"; we just went outside & made friends. I didn't have a cell phone, I pad or Xbox. Only one TV in the house? We had one TV in the neighborhood! We invented the first skate boards from a 2x4, roller skate trucks and an old soda crate nailed to the front. I was a cowboy or a pilot, my B-17 was an old cardboard box with windows cut out of it, and boy did I bomb the hell out of Germany! (That's when I wasn’t getting shot down). So true, Dave. There are are still a lot of people who live like that around me. We call them Amish. Ohio's got a huge Amish population. My wife's 75 year old mother still chop and splits her own wood, and heats her house that way... and she lives in Plattsburgh, NY.... near Uglytruk.
