66 Corsa rear grille
Posted by: RJM3 ()

I am replacing the missing rear grille area on my newly acquired '66 Corsa. A P/O had removed the rear panel in order to run straight exhausts. Naturally the panel did not follow the car. I've found the shiny aluminum Corsa center piece and I just acquired the metal panel, which I am guessing comes from a Monza or a 500 as the panel does not have the screw holes for the Corsa centerpiece, however the Corsa centerpiece fits perfectly in the framed area.

Question: Is the Corsa center piece simply a trim piece that was added to the Monza/500 panel? If so, is there additional grill pieces that fit into either side of the Corsa center piece or is the Monza/500 horizontal grills simply showing through?

Thanks,

Bob

I added the Corsa grille inserts onto our 65. I held them up over the existing grillwork, marked the hole locations with a sharpie, and drilled 1/8 inch holes. Then I painted the old grille openings black so they'd not show through the Corsa inserts. Then I attached the Corsa inserts using stainless steel screws. Took all of about an hour. Here's a pic. No the best pic, but you get the idea.

I don't have a picture on me, but here's what I did for a little extra bling, if you can't find the Chrome Trim for your Grille--

I put chrome, flat-headed, short screws into every single hole in the back of the grille, where they WOULD be mounting the trim, after I re-painted it. Really makes it pop.

Then... you could always *CHROME* your Monza/500 grille and then paint back to the chrome lip. (etch chrome to be painted before painting) This is what GM would have done if someone kidnapped the bean-counters for a day LOL.

*BLING!*

(Sorry about the tooth missing at the top center - that's to clear the engine pulley! Yes, it's that close. It killed me to have to modify the grille but it had to be done.)

Nice work Craig !

I would take off the next one at the right to create as 'balanced missing' since it is at the centerline.

Just my 2 cents..

There are no Monza or 500 grill "bars" behind the Corsa chrome inserts on my 65
which I believe is original. When the inserts are removed there are two big holes.
I think Clark's sells the small attaching screws. They are chrome phillips oval head.

VegasVair is correct....'65 Corsa's had open "holes" where the inserts go. 1966 Corsa's simply add a trim piece over the grill.

On a '66 Corsa, does the grill opening get the cove silver paint or stay body color? My '66 has silver, but the paint is not original.

The same "Argent" paint that is on the tail-light cove goes on the grill portion of the panel, then the anodized aluminum trim surround screws onto that.

To add to Craig Nichols' idea, instead of chroming the panel you could have it powder coated bright silver, then you paint the non-grill area body color.
