4 speed to PG conversion?
Posted by: danyarger ()
Date: May 25, 2011 09:28PM

My wife wants to learn to drive but she refuses to learn in a stick shift. How hard is it to convert to PG? I'm sure I could trade straight for an auto with someone who wants a 4 speed. Parts needed? This way I'd solve that oil soaked clutch problem also.

+1 for getting a beater...

Course, no reason it can't be another Corvair!

Easier to sell your car and buy a PG. Lots of little things you will need.

Dan,

I did this on my 64 for precisely the same reason. Its easy. Here's an old thread describing it. Let me know if you have any questions.

With all the parts from a doner car, STD to Auto is easy. In Late models, Auto to Std is easy!

Wish we could just pull our cars up next to each others' and swap 'em. I've got PG, am going to convert to standard soon. Wife was disappointed when she saw it was an auto.

I just re-read your original post and noticed that you wrote "wants to learn to drive". She doesn't drive at all? I'd say start with the stick in a large empty parking lot or off-road and get her used to the stick shift before embarking on the rest of it. It might be best to engage a friend to do the teaching and stay out of it because teaching her yourself can lead to unnecessary marital tension. Maybe you can find a rental car that's a stick? When I had a car lot, I once sold a car but had to teach both the husband and wife how to drive a stick - I said fine but refused to guarantee the clutchgrinning smiley

Dan,maybe you can find a corvair with a PG in it for not too much money, then you would be a two vair family and not loose your 4-speed. If she likes corvairs I personally think thats a better solution, but good luck with whatever you decide, and I agree maybe if you could find someone else too teach her to avoid the marital tension,no fun.

Yeah she doesn't drive at all. My wife is 39 and has never been licensed. I did try to teach her in my MGB which was a stickshift but we all know it takes about a week to master a stick and she gets frustrated easily. She seems to like Jeeps, Mazda Miata's, and Smart cars. Owning 2 Corvairs is probably not a good idea as I'd never have time to work on hers if I'm always working on mine lol.

Oh that will sell quick. Still not in my price range yet. My wife wants a Mazda Miata with automatic.. She calls the Corvair "Old grandpa"
