CORVAIR PROTOTYPES & ARTIST CONCEPTIONS !!!

The unusual corvair photo thread was getting pretty long.

How about some styling studio or artist conception photos.

Did you know the Corvair station-wagon was projected to be front engined ?

I read or I was told that if there would have been a 70 model vair, this was the one that was on the drawing board to be it.

Actually, that photo is of a clay-model concept for the 1965 redesign. Notice that the date in the bottom left-hand corner is 6-12-62.

that is something for 1962. Did you see the pics of the shortened vair on the picture thread ? It looked just like a vega ( Or maybe a vega looked like a shortened corvair ) The rear window and roofline looked exactly like the vega.

That's easy... cost.

In 1960-early 62, the Corvair was seen simply as an economy car... one that was failing as a product since it was not selling s as well as its conventional competition AND had much lower contribution margins due to a realtively high production cost... so every penny saved was important.

Only after the Monza began selling well to folks outside of the intended market did Chevy realize they could "upmarket" the car. Chevy didn't have a modern 3sp auto until the late 60's... by the Corvair development was virtually dead.
