Not easily, the reverse for a VW is push down and then pull back, the reverse for a Corvair is over to the left and then up. I am not certain the VW will have enough movement to allow that. Where did you read that it was being done?

EDIT for quick second thought: I presume you have a Corvair gearbox in your rail? If so why not use the normal Corvair shifter? Just curious.......

best wishes, Steve

I have a sandrail with corvair drivetrain, and i use an empi trigger shifter (with the reverse trigger normally used for a vw). I cut out the reverse lockout stuff so the trigger serves no purpose in my application (takes 2 seconds). It's bolted to the usual shifter box that is welded to the tube frame, and then the shaft comes from shifter box towards the rear, and right under my rear seats (its a 4 seater), it uses 1 beefy ujoint to angle downwards towards the selector shaft of the corvair gearbox, and then finally one more ujoint where the shaft actually connects to the selector. I dont have any pictures, but I'll be out in the dezert next weekend, I could take pictures then.

Did you ever figure this out? I just picked up a Jamar shifter for my buggy. They sell a rod kit with 1/2" steel rod and a few universal joints. Curious to see if anyone has done the leg work yet

I do not have pics , but I actually bought a VW buggy shifter to try in a vair and also a later Corvette shifter assy modified to try. The problem I found with both is that the location of where the 'ball' of shifter rides into the unit is below the plane of the shaft. That makes the shift pattern wrong for a corvair!
The shifter ball must be above the plane of the shaft. That will require more work.
I was/am trying to get my shifter in an ideal place for me in my car.

For a shifter itself you might want to look into one of the billet aftermarket shifters for the Borg Warner T5/T45/T56, etc and adapt it to the Corvair shift tube [lmr.com]
