Does it just crossfire like nutsoid? Why would a cracked cap even cause such???

Sometimes a cracked cap lets moisture in...than will cause crossfires.

Manufacture defect or a cap that was not seated correctly. Where did it actually break? Did it break at the ears were the screw downs are at? Or the rotor was off center not being concentric to the cap.

Misfires, backfires.... depends on location of crack and/or carbon tracking. A crack, dust or carbon can develop from center terminal and spread outward or it can spread between plug wire terminals.

I've discovered Accel and Blue Streak make the best distributor caps and rotors. Original AC-Delco would be second choice.

A lot of junk parts out there these days. A new cap I bought was cracked within a couple of months of use. The new rotor was significantly shorter at the contact tip than the old Delco one. Very high carbon tracks showed the rotor was barely aligned to the caps contacts.

As I said, a lot of junk parts out there. Now I try to get Delco stuff.

Back in the 60's and 70's it was standard practice to replace the distributor cap and rotor when you changed the points.

While not common, cracked distributor caps happened and caused mis-fires.

The inside of an old points style distributor tends to get dirty from the points wearing out and of course there was grease for the cam. Any crack will gather this debris and form a conductive path for high voltage.

Bubba, as I recall, points and rotor came as a set sometimes, with cap sepparate. As a matter of fact ,I still have a set(NON-vair) hanging on my shop wall.
