Size of Original FC Muffler
Posted by: isucorvair ()

Clarks is closed, or I would call them.

What is the length, and diameter of the original FC muffer?

I have one on the van, but not sure if its "Stock" - looks kinda short. I have a few extra round mufflers in the garage, but are all longer then the one on the van, and look like they are "too long", and would be too close to the tire.

Eric if you have an assembly manual you might check in it. My Manual is in the shop with the red Rampside I will check it when I take some parts up later.

Yo 'Ric,
This what I measured on my 64 before it was laid to rest.
5 3/4" OD X 17" Long inlet and outlet opposite offset.
The pocket formed in the body sheet-metal I measured at: @10 1/2" Wide X 6" deep with the tailpipe cutout offset as well.
FYI, BTW, FWIW: I and others have used Cherry Bomb "Turbo" muffler #16803
It measures 13" Long, 7 3/4" Wide (Oval) with 2" inlet and outlet offset. The tailpipe end is about an inch too high. I've been running without one.
It is louder than stock but not annoying. Of course mine is a Rampside and its tough to hear much going on back there.

Thanks for the response - mine is a Greenbrier, so no Cherry Bomb for me. My 2 year old thinks its too loud anyway.

I just installed a Walker #17856 muffler on my Rampside and it has the correct 1-7/8" inlet that fits over the crossover pipe without having to use any bushings or reducers. I did have to cut 1-1/2" off of the inlet pipe length.
The muffler is about 5" in diameter and total length (including inlet & curved outlet pipes) is 27-1/2".

The application was for a 1985 K-Car (Dodge Aries/600/Plymouth Reliant) with a 4-Cylinder engine. I purchased it at my local O'Reilly Auto Parts.

Just thought I'd pass this along.

Ok-

So, I have a Walker 21310 Muffler, came from a stash of GB parts, and came with instructions for installation on EM Vairs, Wagons, and FC's.

The body of the muffler, inlet to outlet, no tailpipe is about 21" long.

It WILL NOT fi in any angle I can put it in.

In the photos, you can see the muffler I am pulling off (probably not original), and the new muffler.

Also, holding the new muffler into place - it is touching the tire, back of the pocket in the body, and top of the pocket.

Tires are 205/70-14, on stock rims.

I'll call Clarks in the morning to find out the dimensions on their muffler, but anyone on here have a stock FC that you could shoot a picture of the underside muffler clearance?

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Thanks to you guys, and CLarks, I found out that my exhaust Crossover was custom made, and not shaped correctly at the muffler end. It looked stock to me, pretty well done.

Does anyone have an FC Exhaust crossover / Y-pipe for sale?

Dan -

Its a shame, I gave away both middle benches out of the van I parted- they were original and red, and could have been cleaned up. The guy was making garage couches out of them.

I have a 61 Rampside that had no muffler, but the rest of the plumbing is present. I purchased a new muffler from Clark's and it installed easily, except if I turn the muffler so that the tail pipe is lined up with the notch in the fender, the muffler is very close to the tire. Is this how it should be? What is the distance from the tire required?

Eric, I have the stock Y pipe that I took out of my 62 GB. It's rusty on the outside and I had to cut the muffler off, so there's still the sleeve of the old muffler on the pipe. I'll give it to you for shipping. What would be the best cheapest way to ship it? I'm in N.Y.

Jimmy -

I put a NOS muffler on my (old) Greenbrier about a year ago - with a new Clarks Crossover, which fit perfectly.

Sadly, i sold the Greenbrier earlier this year.

Eric,

If you recall, I tried to buy your blue Greenbrier. The day we first spoke, or was it emailed, the new owner was supposed to pick her up later that day.

I missed out on that one!

I know this is old but since it is the first one that comes up during a search I thought i would update it.

The one for the K-Car is still available from walker, the 21310 that ISUCORVAIR mentioned is no longer available.

I ordered the Kcar one for my rampside and it costs a whopping 29 bucks. I will update this and my thread when it arrives and I can test fit it.
