supercharged 3800 corvair build
Date: October 05, 2010 02:16PM

HI. I AM THE BUILDER OF THE SUPERCHARGED CORVAIR. I BUILT IT IM MY HOME GARAGE WITH STANDARD TOOLS NOTHING FANCY. IT IS A SUPER CHEAP BUILD!!! EASY!! I DONT HAVE A LOT OF TIME OR MONEY, SO PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND AND I AM NOT DONE I JUST WANT TO MAKE IT DRIVABLE BEFORE WINTER SINKS IN THEM I CAN CLEAN IT UP AND MAKE IT NICER. MY MAIN GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO HAVE A UNIQUE CAR THAT IS PRETTY QUICK ( I WANT TO BE IN THE 12'S IN THE 1\4) AND GET OVER 20MPG DRIVING THE CAR NOT JUST BABYING IT. O AND LOW MAINTANCE. ALMOST ALL OF THE PARTS ARE FROM THE CORVAIR OR THE DONOR CAR,A WRECKED 98 GTP. I HAVE TO GO OUT AND WORK ON IT FOR A FEW MINUTES, I PLAN TO DRIVE IT TO WORK THURSDAY 20MILES. I WILL TRY TO GET MY PICS TOGETHER AND SHOW MY BUILD SOON.

Welcome! And thanks for signing up. Not too many guys have tried the transverse mid-engine and I for one am really interested in how you did it. There's one guy who did something similar using a Cadillac Northstar V8 but he had to bubble his quarter panels to make the tires fit. Everybody is going to be totally jealous of your 4-speed automatic! (I assume it's an automatic, right?)

We love pictures! (Attach a file [above], browse and select your shot, click "attach" when you get back to the reply frame.

Great idea, I love it!

Thanks for joing. I thought about doing that but the free donor car was 800 miles away. Your car is more fun because it sounds like a Corvair engine. You may have started a trend here.

While you are gathering pictures, tell us about what you did with the computerized portion of engine / trans? control.

Welcome!

Try keeping the CAPS LOCK OFF. IN CYBER SPEAK IS THE EQUIVALENT TO SHOUTING!

Neat project, I've always wanted to do the same with an SHO motor...

I am tried to attach pics, but they were to big any help? It is loud right now but I am building a exhaust for it out of old stuff inculding coil spring stopper brackets, saving a buck were you can right. computer end no problem took the fuse box and pcm and harness for the engine and trans which I had reflashed for the engine mods. I looked at wiring diagram and put power to pin 20 of the pcm and ign on 19 , and added power to main relay in fuse block. Actually I am not finished with it. I kept the factory harness to keep the factory stuff working. I have it starting from the key but not shutting of with the key. I have to shut the fuel pump off for now. I have to check the wiring on the main relay. the new fuse blocks are kind of confusing the terminals do not go strait threw, so you have ohm all the terminals. Ok Thanks for welcoming me I will give lots more info.

After 10 years of driving it, I recently took over my wifes 2000 bonneville ssei (supercharged 3800). I had Told her on numerous occasions that I was going to pull the drivetrain out and pit it in a corvair. It's very reliable, decent on gas (overall average is about 24mpg), and it is QUICK! It has no problem roasting the front tires. Please keep us up to date on the build. Interested on how you worked the drive axles/rear suspension.

I have A Caddy Seville STS. It is a 95 with only 110,000. I'd be interested in offers. Not looking for much.

No just a couple of 2x3 and 2x2 steel to the frame rails to the stock engine mount and trans mount to hold the engine up and two strut rods to hold the motor torque. Axle's are stock cv tri pod I cut down the axle and had a friend weld ends on it to fit the stock drive shaft ends. trailing arms a stock. I boxed them and installed upgraded bushings. I did install coil over shocks, and remove spring mounts for room. It would have fit with the springs just would be very tight.
