Warning - Xact Brand Spark Plug Wires
Date: September 11, 2010 03:48PM

I bought a set of Xact brand spark plug wires at Advance Auto, trying to save some money on the overpriced set that Clark's sells. Upon trial fitment, I determined that the rubber collars that are intended to provide a seal at the shroud do not fit. They are slightly too small, and don't provide a snug seal. The slightest pull on the plug wire loosens them. I don't know if they're poorly designed or if they are old stock and shrunken from aging. Anyone else have this problem?

I have bought mine from auto valu, regional flaps. 26 bucks good fit. 7 mm, not 8 like Seth sells.

They have the same end configuration as the set I removed, but diameter is measurably smaller.

A fellow in our club bought an aftermarket set at the local parts store with the same problem - boot collar too small and don't stay in shroud.
Don't recall the brand name.

Why not just buy from Seth? Seth does a tremendous service to the Corvair community and I seem to recall I only paid 37.95 a couple of years ago for a set of 8mm wires. They may have gone up a bit in the last couple of years but still well worth the investment. ethracer@aol.com">Sethracer@aol.com

One day, if all of us keep saving a buck, places like Clark's, Underground, et al, will be gone.
Then what?

Yes, the vendors wires are "overpriced" .......because they are made correctly?

I purchased the silicone ons from Clarks' and they are great. The standard Clarks 7mm wires are not as good as they higher priced ones so get the better ones and you will be happy.

One gets what one pays for, most of the time. Although I go thre 2 sets of the sillycone wires that were bad. wires leaking to ground and ends not done right and wires pulling out. Also the coil wire cups were to small.

My car has a set of premium Belden wires from Napa. They work great and fit very well. I have used Belden for years and prefer them over any other although I do agree with VegasVair's comment about Clark's and Underground going out of business if we keep shopping elsewhere. I buy mostly from Clark's and they always seem to have what I need when noone else even knows what I am talking about.

Do the lower cost wires have the 90' bend or just come straight out?
A year ago, I bought 2 sets at the VW shop ($6.99 set-4 wire/coil wire per set) reason being is I needed them quick and no corvair angle top were around.
I cut to fit and fit snug on shroud, only 7mm size.
Straight top part on boot only is a problem on one wire by spring for throttle
They still work for $13

You have to understand, this inexpensive stuff is all made in China and is substandard at best. Even the NAPA stuff lately is suspect. USE OUR VENDORS! They have both theirs and our best interests at heart, or they go away...

That's funny. The brand is "Xact" and the fit is anything but. ;-}
I'd return them with an explanation about why, though I doubt this will stop them from selling their remaining stock to unsuspecting Corvair owners.

I did return them and told the desk person what the problem was and that it is a critical problem for an air-cooled car. His listened patiently, and as he entered the return into his system he skipped the selection that said "part defective" and entered "customer did not need". I presume it's back on the shelf for the next customer.
