Hehe havnt been on here much since we started a new project in January. It all started last year when Steve Ridderman and I were getting ready to take our cars to Iowa to run the gokart track. We asked ourselves, "Why are we using 2 truck and 2 trailers when we could get one really long trailer and haul both cars?" So we bought a 34' long trailer (although a few extra feet wouldnt hurt anybody) Turbo Diesel 3/4 ton Dodge did pretty good pulling it, but we thought we might need a bigger truck in the future, so we made note of this and went on with our lives until this past January.

That go-cart track at Marshalltown is addictive. Neat project. Who gets to drive?

So work began, stripping the fire body, the 1250 gallon/min pump, and the 1000 gallon water tank. The pump used a drive line transfer case, so a new drive shaft and mid bearing had to be fabricated. They build these things like tanks, lots of torching and plasma cutting just to get the body to move a little.

We bought a hydraulic tilt bed for it, but due to time constraints and us wanting to use the truck right away, the hydraulics will have to wait for now. We simply bolted the flat bed on. Future plans include reattaching some of the fire tool boxes under the bed for tool storage and lots of beer coolers.

So for now, loading the flat bed is done by use of a trailer used as a intermediate ramp. It worked pretty good. I fabed up a super heavy duty hitch, and if we want to we can pull the 2 car trailer behind with one on the bed and haul 3 corvairs wherever we want. The gearing is a little short, with a cruising speed of about 60 MPH, and it got 8-10 MPG when we took it to the Mad Anthony Corvair Show last Saturday. So far its been a really fun project and will last the rest of my life, probably without ever needing an oil change.

We also changed the name of our "Corvair Racing Team" to WTF Racing (Where's the Fire) and had logos made for the side of the truck and our cars.

Hahahahaha love it. A Ford hauling the chevy to the race track.

At first I was hopeing you would have left the fire truck bed on with the tank. that would have made up for one @#$%& air compressor. That being if you could ever fill it up. You could have used the side boxes for parts and tools for the cars. And REALLY scare the others at the race track, After all how many race teams bring there own fire truck to the track.

Do you need a Chief? I have 26 years as a career fire fighter and retired as a Battalion Chief and I have 9 years as a Crew Chief for my son's midget.

X-Chief looking for work. Joe
