Posted by: darndot ()
Date: May 07, 2010 10:14AM

I thought this deserverd its own thread.

Marco said "I like the use of the 68/69 Camaro door glass and the black out treament on the the qtr glass!!"

How hard would this be?
How close is the Carmaro door glass come to fitting?

Otherwise, right click, save file as and save it to your computer, and then attach it in an email to your son.

Back to topic - I didn't think the camaro glass actually fit? I thought that was an old wives' tale so to speak?

Camaro Glass is very close. Will still need adjustments. I just spoke to someone about this Possibly acrlyic with hard coating. I have not had time to work on this, but still something on my list of things to do.

Just off the cuff... woul either need to cut the glass at the bottom to fit in the Vair bracket or maybe transfer Camaro windo reg and tracks into the Vair Door. I'm sure its not a simple as that, as the vair door has the ven window frame holding the front edge of the slider, like a 67 Camaro. the 68-69 would have a differnt front track.....

No, not yet, but I was going to investigate the concept...
But I am considering putting in Astro Ventilation, because of the not having vent windows.
thumbs up on that sweet LM

My 65 project car didn't come with vent windows. I really like the clean look. Sounds like it may be out of my skill level.

If somebody does it please keep us updated.

You can order custom door glass. Not sure what cost would be for a pair, though.
Maybe a good case for a group buy.
Hey, Richard1, are there any shops down there that would make these for a good price?

Ok here is the deal on the orange car, it is owned by a gentleman named Rick who lives in Cedar City, UT. This guy is quite possibly the nicest guy on the planet, he has spent his whole life doing upholstery on other peoples expensive hot rods, has an eye for detail and style, and now finally has started working on something for him.

This beautiful orange car when examined in person is literally flawless. He explained everything that he did to make the Camaro windows work, this is not a bolt in job. He says that he has hundreds of hours grinding and fitting the glass, changing the rear quarter windows geometry, and then building filler strips to make up the angle difference. Everything is hand made and fit with a jewelers craftmanship.

One of my buddies speculated that this would be between a $4000 or $5000 conversion if you paid someone to do the work.

Rick is still working on his upholstery right now and it will be world class just like the outside of his car.He installed bucket seats in the rear with a center console that starts at the dash and ends in the rear package area. His door panels are incredible with molded in speaker pods and arm rests and power everything. I am trying to get him to join the CCF but he seems to be more interested in driving and finishing his car. smiling smiley

Back on topic this glass conversion is difficult to explain in person and impossible for me to explain on the forum. Your best bet would be to meet this craftsman a show.

How in the heck can you cut tempered glass?? It has built in stresses and will fracture when cut or trimmed. This is one of those "don't ask me how I know" deals.

Two years ago he had the car at the Fan Belt Toss and that one was in Costa Mesa. Maybe he'll show up in Palm Springs at this years GWFBT.
It was parked to the left of the Rampside you guys saw in Sacramento last weekend.

My poor old digital Canon served me well for many years, but chose to die that day. Other pictures of it did not turn out.

He spent literally hundreds of hours "grinding/buffing" on it to take the excess off.
The fact that he didn't break one in the process just helps you see the care and patience he possesses.
Someone like me would just end up eliminating the glass altogether.grinning smiley
