Some pics from today, I picked up a set of fibreglass bucket seats for $60...
Nice & low, I'll be usind the original seat tracks. Shaved the LH handle ass'y, and the front edge of the door. I also picked up 2 lengths of 1 5/8"x .125" Aluminum tubing for the rollbar, but it won't be bent for a couple weeks(when a friend puts his racecar shop together in his new building)smoking smiley

Also a couple pics of the LH shaved door

Pics of a completed seat framework. I moved them back 3". This is the easiest/strongest way I could think of to move them back, with the materials I have already...

I've done some work to the Corvair in the past 3 weeks, but not alot. Most of my attention has gone to buying/stripping out a 78 Malibu($100, lol). The drivetrain is a Goodwrench 305/rebuilt TH350, and has been cleaned up & installed into my 80 Monte Turbo Coupe. I've now been driving it for a week(and still fixing a multitude of issues) The wheels I bought a few months back are on with new BFG's, and I found the build sheet sticking out of the patially disassembled headliner !smiling bouncing smiley

Build sheet for the Monte=

Now onto the Corvair... I have put on the mirrors from the 78 Malibu I scrapped out, but they still need to be angled out more(so I'm hopin 70's Camaro mirror stocks, or whole mirrors, will be better suited).

I also modified the A pillar drip rails to fit properly. The LH side always did have that 1/4"+ gap at the top. Of course, it is covered with the SS chrome strip-

I got a shift knob from ebay recently, but I am looking for someone to build me a custom one, or I might look into making my own that looks something like-

Al, Two things. If you are going to use vent windows make sure the mirrors are far enough back for them to open. Second, ten plus pounds for each seat track, but an aluminum roll bar? There won't be a sanctioning body checking to see if it worked when you are upside down on the side of the road. For weight go chrome-moly, or mild steel, if you aren't racing, weight doesn't matter.

He is simply sayng that if you want a roll bar for real safety then don't use aluminum. Of course further up in the thread it is mentioned that you know that already.

Well, the way I see it is, a triangulated structure is still a structure. FAR safer than no stucture. I know a couple guys that have racecar fab shops, so Chro-Mo is readily available, but this is more for looks than anything. My car better not get upside down on me, after being around for 45 years gggg

Like azdave says, I meant if you are going to build one for looks, why not make it functional? I agree, a triangulated structure will stiffen the car and work to that end, but I don't think it would hold up in a needed situation. Your'e right that you don't want it to get upside down, but s*** happens.

I think there were several racecars built by Porsche and others years ago. Using aluminum, they were very light. But did they really have a bad reputation, or did the saftey police just outlaw them?

If aluminum is used for a roll bar, make sure if you crash the car doesn't slide on its roof.

All joshing aside, you really should use steel. Your car's going to need the structural rigidity with that huge, torquey rat motor.
