Crown V8 for sale
Posted by: Corveight ()
Date: October 14, 2009 12:27AM

For sale: 1965 Corvair Corsa Crown V8. Originally a turbo car. Car has not run in 9 years but rolls eaisily. Would need to be trailered.
The Good: Crown seat with padded inserts, Crown headers, Corvair turbo mufflers, Crown alt bracket, sway bars, like new tires on 14" slotted aluminum uni-lug wheels, Grant steering wheel, Corsa dash and stainless window trim included.
The Bad: Paint is in tough shape. Typical rust in front fenders above rockers and lower front corners of doors. Lots of surface rust on frame and floor, but solid. Below windshield is very solid with one quarter sized hole. Transmission has a crack on top of the case. This crack did not affect function, as I drove it 3 hours home in this condition. 350 c.i. engine, year unknown, with double hump heads and 12 1/2:1 pistons. Stock drum brakes.
The Ugly: Rear wheel wells have been cut open to above belt line. It would be a major job to get these back to stock looking.
Asking $2000 or best offer. Short on cash? I'll consider trades. For those interested, I can send more detailed pictures. I'm located in the Cleveland Ohio area.
Thanks,
Warren warrenholt@sbcglobal.net

No shots of the engine? Must be no longer installed? And no shots under the rear cover?

Might be worth it anyway...

The improperly cut front inner wheel wells are most likely the reason the rear wells were cut out in frustration attempting to get the thing to cool at highway speeds even though you mentioned a uneventful 3 hr trip home when you got it ... hmmm
Well if there is any cooling issues theres a simple Corv8 cooling system fix: replace the back half of the front wheel wells to correct the airflow within the former trunk.

I would be buying this car if I already didnt have my Crown car as well as 37 other cars/trucks/vans , 5 golf carts a 4 wheeler and a forklift...eye rolling smiley

No Ed, that is the correct Crown cut... works very well...

The overheating problems arose as people tried to save their trunks..

Low pressure area is at the front of the wheels.

Matt, I am familiar with the original Crown cut instructions.. Since then they have been revised..We discussed high and low pressure areas in Crowns at the JAX convention during the V8 meeting. Low pressure is front of the tire to balljoint.
Think of the tire as a sort of fan , no blades but theres a swirl of air going on around them, the back of the tire can bring air into the trunk if the opening is too large causing a stalemate at high speeds.

I have my trunk floor, and half my wheel openings replaced. Phil Dally had to put it back mostly sealed in to get things sorted out some # of yrs ago. 190 deg running 90 MPH for 10 miles proves my car works.

No 2 Crowns are the same so your results WILL vary, if it works for your car it is what it is.

opps, meant the front...

I've never went 90 mph for more that 1 mile! ggg

Actually it's the low speeds that get the heat up....at least for most guys I've known

The only open area here is the bottom of the trunk , everythimg else sealed to direct cooling air thru the rad. Two vents at the top rear of the engine enclosure directed out the stock rear air intake grill to help air cool the engine. Fans set at 180 deg. and never run while driving. Will idle all day at 185. Normal driving temp runs around 170 , 155 on colder days , not hot enough
it cools to well sometimes , with no engine heat inside the car.

Theres a decent car there , someone will be happy.

Do you know why the rear inners were cut like that? tire clearance? cooling?

Good guess, Ed. The reason given to me was added cooling. Funny how this mod never quite caught on with others.

I'll give you 2 grand if you'll cover the shipping !

My old Corv8 did not have any cutouts in the front fenders and it did not overheat. It did have the cutouts in the valance It did get warm inside .
It was built around 1973.

pic from around 78.

There is a red Kelmark car sitting, rotting near the end of Speers road in oakville. It's rough to say the least and makes this car look like a screamin deal. Just ask Dustin for the $$!! he supports juvinille car loans!

If Unsafe will put up the 2K price I will pay for shipping . . . Just figure the shipping to 2200 W. 101st Street North, Valley Center, KS 67147. You don't mind if I have it shipped to my shop do you Kevin? Just send the open title with the car, I will take care of the rest.

That is an excellent deal for anyone wanting to build a V8 corvair. Most the hard work and parts are there. A decent bodyman would be able to fix the wheelwells.
