Thats why i asked about this (sprint) corvair on CL in AZ
I do not know nothing about them
like trying to put shelby emblems on a 65 mustang fastback and say its a gt500
can't just go on word
and when you are spending some major cash
later is not the time to find out you got somthing different

M.R. -- It's like a trick question. A Fitch Sprint could have a few Sprint components that were bought mail order or it could have every option available installed by Fitch and it would still be a Sprint.

For CORSA competion it needs to have a certain number of Fitch items, 4 or 5 I think.

Bill Thomas bought out Fitch and likely sold Sprint parts .

Then two brothers bought out Thomas and continued building Solar Sprints well into the 70s along with their own version called the Solar Cavilar.

The roofs were also reproduced as were the emblems .

So like we've been saying -- the only way to document it is by a paper trail. Whether it's mail order receipts or receipts from Fitches shop.

My Sprint had it all from the time the original owner plunked down a 50 dollar deposit when he special ordered the car all the way until the 80s when he died.

The roof on the white one above does look like an original in the blurry photo. The repros did not have the little jut below the side window.

The guy who started this thread asked straight questions then got all huffy when he heard the truth.

From what he's said and judging by the bolt on side marker lights and rear lights I'd suspect that the car has nothing to to with Fitch but rather it was just an owner expressing himself.

The headlight flasher mentioned earlier in this thread would have been above the radio, not in the lower left where the hole is in his car . Likely a toggle switch went there.
The gauges under the dash are not sprint items either. I'm not sure it actually has a single sprint item on it.

Maybe it's the " provenance" ?

It's a shame that he won't comply with multiple requests to see the 155 HP decal.

If it was somehow an authentic Fitch item it might be worth more than the whole car is as it would be the only one known to exist !

I can see the difference in the tail lights on the one i posted now
only the roofline seems the same
paperwork with the car sounds like a plus

Mike,

I am sorry if I came across with a bad vibe from ny posts but I was just trying to answer your questions.

Here is my point of view, you said you were a newbie to Sprint, so I assumed you didn't know a ton of info and back history.

You asked if anyone could identify your car as a Sprint from 3 pictures. NONE of the pictures showed a single Sprint accessory.

You referenced the title, engine, and special badging, bnut posted no pictures to help us understand what you are talking about as none of us have seen a Corvair titled as a Sprint or the 155hp badge....EVER.

I have been deeply involved with Fitch Sprints for the last 18 years. I am the caretaker of the "unofficial" Sprint regristry.

I have owned and documented every Sprint accessory listed in the Sprint catalogs.

At this point...based on the 3 pictures....I can't tell you your IS or ISN't a Sprint, but I don't see a single thing that tells me it is.

Please post more information so we can help you.
We cant do it without your help.

Fitch Sprint UNSAFE post...

UNSAFE POSTED

"Bill Thomas bought out Fitch and likely sold Sprint parts .

Kevin, This is the first time that I have ever heard about the Bill Thomas statement above.

It has always been my understanding that Art Hershberger from Wi, bought out the inventory from John fitch and started Solar Automotive.

Art, created the Solar Cavalier and the solar Sprint uop until an acciedent took him out of business.

I have owned several NOS items with both John Fitch's label and Solar stickers attached to them.

I have spoke with other enthusiants who were at Arts shop when all his inventory was auctioned off...

NOS Sprint emblems and full width stoneguards were practically given away.....brings tears to my eyes....

I owned a 67 a couple years ago that was loaded with fitch parts but no paperwork,so I was not going to spend any time or money on it to bring it back to show condition, so I sold it. I just bought a Red 66 with complete paperwork all the way back to the dealers order to the factory and all the Fitch garage installation work orders as well as IECO parts orders. It dosen't have all the fitch stuff left on it as some were sold off but can be replaced if I can find them. This car is worth the time and money to redo and is in process now.

I guess unfriendliness on the web is defined as not giving the answer somebody wants to hearmoody smiley

On a side note, those tops look too cool. Are they still being manufactured?

The instruments in the red car don't look like what Fitch would have installed. The two cars I have (junkers) have Stewart Warner gauges installed above the radio in perfectly cut holes. Beautifully cut holes.

The Sprint badge on the red car is like what's on the '65 roadster. The coupe had the badges on the sides of the top.

Clark's lists ventops for $1163. Therer are used tops around. There's one sitting on the roof of my Monza. As in not installed.

I'm selling off my collection of Sprint parts because I'm tired of being told I don't own a "real Sprint" by a certain Alaskan. I'm satisfied with having a real Monza, although I can't prove it's a real Monza. Soon it won't even have the badges.

UNSAFE, you have an amazing collection of literature. Outstanding. Excellent. Unmatched.

edit - the side marker lights on the red car are aftermarket

didn't see anything unfriendly about these posts at all either. As a matter of fact I feel I learned a lot about the Fitch reading this thread. Guess some people are extra sensitive huh?

Rick , Tim has all my sprint stuff now. The way I remember it was Thomas bought out fitch's inventory and sold parts for a brief time before he sold out to the Hershbergers. Never made Sprints - just had the inventory.

It may have been in the handwritten letters that came with my Sprint or something I read from Solar or even in an old Communique.

My info could be off but that's how I remember it. I think Bill only owned it for a brief time

Hello UNSAFE and all: I am thinking of another Bill--Bill Coyle that bought the pieces from Fitch and then on to Solar.

No more replies from the original poster, I was wanting to see that 155hp emblem too.

Yeah , CRS -- I was pretty sure it was a Bill but the last name Thomas kept coming to mind.

Bill Coyle sounds more like it now.

For what it's worth, my first Corvair was a Fitch Sprint with many of the Fitch features including flash-to-pass. In the case of my car, a '66 convertible, the flash-to-pass was mounted about 2/3 of the way down on the instrument panel, below the headlight/wiper switches; similar to what's on "65Sprint's" car.

Attached is one of the few shots I have - taken in 1970 or 71.

Craig, et al... I've seen the flash to pass mounted in the same spot you've mentioned and as this car presents. One was a documented "Fitch Modified" car, the rest were unknown, as to who mounted the switch. I think it's a much better spot for it, as you can flip it, while still holding the wheel. I prefer to dabble in the YS cars, but I've paid attention to a few Sprints as well.

Re: Fitch Sprint? John Fitch, Art Hershberger, & Bill Coyle
Posted by: ral1963 ()
Date: October 21, 2009 09:30AM

I found this tidbit looking through some stuff for another thread....

"
* According to published sources, John Fitch sold all inventory and tooling for the Fitch Sprint to Solar Automotive in November 1971. Art Hershberger officially sold Solar Automotive to Bill Coyle in June of 1978. Bill then liquidated in August of 1980. I’m sure that the show was pretty much over, long before it was sold to Bill Coyle.
"

So Bill Coyle it was, but from John to Art, then Coyle
