Highest recorded hp./tq. Corvair engine????
Posted by: 180PLUS ()

Anyone want to share any dyno proven results from Corvair engines either Forced induction (turbo, supercharged,N2O), or N/A (carbs or EFI)?

The highest hp I ever had was a 92mm. bore Weber carb'd 140 that made 206hp/ 170ft.lbs. It had Generic 3-2-1 Megaphone buggy headers from Otto/ Clarks, A ~235/ 240 deg. @ .050 .525/.525" lift hydraulic cam. SC Perf roller rockers. 40IDA3C carbs with 32mm. venturii. 10:1 compression, Standard size valves, Mild porting. Made peak hp. at 6200RPM., don't remember what RPM peak torque was.

This was verified on a Stuska engine dyno, and didn't include any correction for SAE type comparisons.

I wish I would have dyno'd the 3.75" Salih cylindered, Arias piston, Total Seal rings, 46mm. IDA3C, 48mm./38mm. valves, 10.5:1 engine... It was way stronger than the one we dyno'd, but...

That title should have a question mark after it! This thread is meant to be a place to compile dyno info so others can learn what is actually possible with these engines.

Charley Gault (spelling) runs a 700+ HP sand drag motor on nitro.

Only has to hang together for about 15 seconds...10 to stage...5 to run.

No proof...your just gonna have to take our word for it.

My Crew-Chief believes 900 is possible. cool smiley

Road racers have learned that anything over 250 flywheel is not sustainable for more than 30 minutes...

On the street..occasional blasts...who knows.. rhandyman might get a chassis dyno run for us someday..

Bill Elliots was a .030 overbore, built to very similiar specks as many of Warren LeVeques race turbo motors as run in his Stinger.

It would really be nice to get together enough interested people at the the Performance Workshop to rent a Dyno and have it there ofr a buch of different cars to run on the same dyno.

Make it a special 2 day Performabnce workshop with runs setup on both days so people have time to swap/modify parts for performance checks....

With enough people splitting the costs...it could be a reasonable figure.

I'm looking to make 350 at the flywheel on my street/track 3.0L EFI motor. I'd like to have it installed and running for Iowa next year. I'll post updates on my website as things progress.

I am looking forward to your updates. I am hoping to build a 300 Hp at the flywheel for my 2 door C Dan street car...

Why not hope big ?

I'm hoping for 375 HP at the flywheel !

Anybody wanna hope for 400 ? GGG

A chassis dyno is a great tool for tuning but comparing numbers between two cars for some kind of a King of the Hill contest is silly.

Just having different gears or tire size will drastically alter the readings.

It has as much to do with how the engine reaches it's peak than the actual peak.

I DO plan to be in Iowa , bring spare doors !!!!

180PLUS -- your 32 MM chokes were limiting your peak power . Or you didn't have near enough flow thru the heads.

see chart below.

Will there be drag races in Iowa ? Anyone know for sure ??

Not looking for a "King of the Hill".....just thinking of the "best" place for a bunch of performance minded vairophiles to get together and dyno a bunch of cars with various settings and bolt on parts....

The crummy head design and barely adequate factory cooling fan shroud & oil cooling system will severely limit nearly all exploration of Corvair engine's potential. If you want high horsepower from a rear engined aircooled powerplant, you're gonna have to go German. Or German by way of the North GA hill country and a cat known as Jake Raby and his famous type 4's. Heck , there are so many very basic 1.8 liter & larger bug (type 1) engines that will smoke anything that a Corvair is capable of on regular pump gasoline. Forget trying to make some rocket out of Corvair engine, its a waste of time, unless you're planning on developing new heads, improved cooling system and devoted to increasing quality of stock components and quality machining and close tolerances. Get something with power such as Camaro, Corvette, Mustang, Porsche, or hopped up VW. Absolute waste of time and money trying to extract high horsepower from a Corvair engine. Enjoy and improve it and most of all drive it often, but be realistic and don't try to make high hp, as there isn't enough quality engineering brainpower developing new components and innovating, just a bunch of yoo-hoo , yee-haa jethros with out a clue, trying the same old crap that other morons were trying back in 1965! Make the Corvair a better driver and drive it often. Ya ain't gonna drag race it, if you did try and drag race it, it would be a joke against even the lowliest rear engined aircooled 4 banger. If you can't match up against Herbie, you definitely ain't gonna be competitive with any other more formidable machines!

Kevin,

Your chart with the choke sizes doesn't go high enough for my engine.

Acutally I am calculating my hp from my flow bench readings. My intake system doesn't have chokes. Why would anyone want to "choke" their engine anyway?

LOL - you got me there !

Although most won't believe me, I think my motor is about 250 hp at the crank.

I am building another 3.1 (still) that has heads that should flow a little more than what I have now but will be basically the same otherwise.

I'm "HOPING" for about 20 more horses.

Frankly I'm a little scared of making much more power without things breaking.

All of that power has to go thru that little #6 rod journal before it even gets to the flywheel.

The rods seem kinda small to carry much more power too.

I have a doweled crank gear and flywheel with oversize bolts and ARP case studs along with lightened rods but at about 6800 - 7000 RPM all I see is $ signs !

Heat is definitely a problem at sustained throttle. No problem on the street or autocross or drag strip but things start getting warm on the road courses where I'm on it for more than a few minutes.

Bring spare doors to Iowa !!

BTW - I'm running 36mm chokes.

Regardless of fuel system an IR manifold is the way to go compared to a plenum.

Tom , can you post your flow chart ? I'll dig out the charts on my two different sets of heads to compare.

Just for fun -- of course !

250? 350? 450? Heck, I'd be happy with 150HP if I could just keep it running. tongue sticking out smiley

Kevin, looking forward to seeing you in Cedar Rapids. I will have my car. I drove it to Jacksonville and back. Had a blast.

Rick, I think your idea is great. I would surely be a part of that. Bounce the idea off a few more in the group.

You bet I will Kevin. I should have the flow bench set-up in a couple of weeks. I'll start by flowing a big valve 102 head. Then a modified 140 head. I'm looking for 223 CFM on the intake side. Then I'll work on the exhaust to get me about 78% of the intake flow. At these flow numbers my engine should make 348hp at 7000. NA EFI.

You are correct on the $. Speed costs, how fast do you want to go?

"Although most won't believe me, I think my motor is about 250 hp at the crank."

I'd believe 250hp gross, but not net... but prove the skeptics we're wrong... show an uncorrected 200hp+ at the rear wheels on a dyno...
