White cloudiness on trim molding
Posted by: Tom Rahochik ()

I have had some late model rear cove trim molding (all four pieces) stored away for some time. Coming out of storage, all pieces now have a white cloudiness stain in several areas of the molding. I tried buffing with a chrome polish with negative results. I have heard a rumor that oven cleaner may work but do not want to try anything until I am sure the results would be positive without damaging the moldings. All input is appreciated.

Assuming it is stainless as the EM moldings,

Click on the link below, download the instructions. If all you have is light hazing, you might be able to start out with a 360 or 400 sandpaper, but if there are deeper scratches or dents, follow it all.

If it is aluminum, skip to the aluminum section.

The LM cove moldings are anodized aluminum. The cloudiness is the aluminum oxidizing under the anodized coating. there is nothing you can do other than stripping and polishing to make the cloudiness go away. I stripped the coating off mine with sandpaper and polished them. I hit them with a little polish once a year and they look good. without the coating, they oxidize faster.
