Looks to me to be machined for the center/middle intake.

it is very cool, but I doubt seriously if GM had anything to do with building that. for one thing they would not have used open intake tubes hung out over the fan inlet.

Supposedly Don Yenko was working with GM on some Corvair FI units before the development plug was pulled on the Corvair. Mark Gillispe (sp) mentioned something about it at dinner conversation at the Perfomance Workshop. I think he said he has some of the parts still. Also Hillborn either made or someone adapted their FI to Corvairs for Midiget racing, Steve Goodman would know about that.

As stated on virtual Vairs, you can read all about the Rochester FI engine design and timeline in my book CORVAIR SECRETS, available from me and most Corvair vendors.

In the 1976 edition of Hugh MacInnes' book Turbochargers there is a pic of an early model turbo engine with Rochester fuel injection. It looked a lot like the engine pictured above and featured a central intake plenum. The caption read that it made tremendous power but was not feasible due to high production costs.

I did see the stamped throttle bracket, which is certainly interesting, but I must be missing something in regard to the heads/manifold. I'm seeing studs and nuts holding on a separate cast manifold much like the weber setup.

I've read old Comminque articles that mentioned some of GM's experimental Corvair engines, including FI.

Where do you see that Russ? It looks to me like that is certainly a modified head casting, right from the factory. Are you confusing the upper head studs with something for bolting the manifold on? Look at that rib running between the intake runners, that ain't no bolt on. Heck, the 2nd pic looks like there is even a GM part number cast between cyl 3/5!

One of the midgets that I used to drive had an EVM brand of mechanical injector mounted on it. It was done much in the same manner as Warrens six runner heads but with shorter tubes and a flange for mounting the injector bodies. Burning methanol, it made more power than we could put down. The main problem we had was tossing of the belt while using engine braking from 7500 rpm.

in the pic from the coil side it looks like empty bolt holes below each of the throttle bodies inner mounting bolts. then the other studs would be the stud/nut that could actually be cylinder mount studs as well. I'm most likely wrong, as it's been about 30 years since I had a vair motor apart. winking smiley
