Advice on Hog Rings and Seat Springs?
Posted by: 61Monza ()

Pulled the seats out to install fresh cushions, the old ones are dust. Seat covers are still in good shape.

What's the best way to remove the hog rings? Bend them? Cut them? I know there's a tool for installation, but wanted to ask the pro's before I start messing with removing them.

Also: Driver's seat (61 Monza coupe bucket) has a several busted springs. Is this something I can get locally at a place that re-covers seats, or will they just get a good chuckle? I'd also be into buying some good used ones in anyone has some. Once I get the cover off I'll know exactly what I'm after.

Cheers, Geoff

A good pair of side cutters or pliers will twist them right off. for the springs I used a short piece of 3/16" tubing (brake line) slipped over the break and tack welded in place to form a splint. if you don't have a welder you could most likely even just crimp the ends of the tube to hold it in place.

I cut mine off.

Corvair buckets are the same for other similiar year full-size GM cars, if the springs are too shot and cannot be repaired, good used seat frames should be able to be found fairly easy.

Just cut the rings. The paddock sells replacement springs. Just look under GTO seat parts.

Yeah , cut em unless they are stainless.

I buy the hog rings locally at hardware store , they call em Pig Rings . ????

I ground my installation pliers to a bit of a point and it really helped installing them.

You might be able to just clamp the ends of the broken springs together. Think cable clamp or electrical clamp .

I see different hog ring sizes. What does the Corvair call for?

Interesting. When I search for Hog Rings Upholstery, I get one size.

When I search for hog ring sizes, I get lots of different ones.

IIRC, the 3/4" is the upholstery size.

Twist the rings to remove them, not cut. your forearms and shop will thank you. cutting them shoots half rings everywhere--including at your eyes. Cleanup is a bear.

just use pliers and twist the rings then thread them out. So much easier and safer.

Yup, there are several different sizes of rings! Pig rings, Shoat rings, Hog rings, etc.

Pig rings work the best as they are the smallest and probably the 3/4" like Frank said.

Some rings you have to cut, they are wrapped to tight to twist them off. If you can twist then off do it. I use 7" high leverage side cutters, dykes, wire cutters, whatever you want to call them. These are the heavy duty of the cutters. Not to advertise but Harbor Freight actually has a decent brand that works.

And this is the #1 reason I will not have laser surgery, as I am always wearing glasses (since third grade they are on my head when I am awake). Just look at the scar marks on my glasses and they tell the story of how many bits and pieces the glasses have saved from my eyes! And they get changed every two years....eye popping smiley

For many years I have salvaged good springs from extra passenger side seats.
For FC's, springs can be moved around putting the best under the drivers position. Broken springs replaced again salvaged from another one, passenger side.

You can take an extra spring and sister it to a broken also.

If you want to replace the spring you can get new. This is only one place, do a search.
