A 1969 Corvair for sale in a Chevy Dealer's showroom

FWIW. Today I was dropping off a new Impala for service at the Mike Dougherty Chevy dealership in Sacramento. In the showroom is Mr. Dougherty's own Corvair for sale. It's really nice, but not stellar. Has a really nice light blue paint job, but on close inspection the right rear quarter is metallic - metalflake?, the rest isn't...a REAL close match, so I don't know why the rear quarter is different. But otherwise really decent paint. Chrome and bumpers are very nice, glass perfect, stainless steel trim perfect, restored interior (I could drool at this point). Interestingly, it is 140 with all smog stuff, hooked to a PG. A sano engine bay. Doesn't have the Corsa dash, has a fancy stock looking steering wheel, the corresponding padded dash, padded area around the radio. (I'm not that sharp on anything past 1966). Someone else can chime in here on what came on 1969s.

17,000 original miles, and he's asking $19,500 for it. Although it is really a fine car, about four years ago I had occasion to see here in Sacramento that 1966 Turbo convertible with 50,000 original miles that sold on eBay for close to $20,000, and it was what you would call a stellar car. If one doesn't mind drooling in public, there's nice, and then there's....NICE.

I can't see him getting this price, but you never know.

Now its on ours !

What would be really great is if someone who is local to this car could take about 500 pictures of every inch of it to document it's stock condition- I bet they have the original Bill of sale and window sticker too ! The 1969 Group would love to have photo documentation of this car and the VIN.

Anyone volunteer ? Photos of this car would be a great help to anyone restoring a 69 to stock condition especially the engine bay.

I should be stopping by in the next day or so to pick up my Impala; I'll try to remember to jot down the serial number and see what else I can glean. I did note that the plate in the engine bay confirmed it is a 69 and I didn't see the LOS, so it wasn't built in Los Angeles. All that smog junk sure busies up the engine bay. I like the later bucket seats.

I stopped by today and here are some of the numbers I got off the VIN tag. I didn't dawdle, as I was fast talking the salesman as I popped the hood and he was looking closely over my shoulder as I did this.

I gleaned this from the first line: 10537, then 69, then WRN388709. I think the last group was 04 something, but then I had to cut it short and leave.
It has a 140, with smog pump and related hoses. PG. Although it has a Monza dash, the dash and glove box appear to be done in black wrinkle like Corsa, but not exactly. Maybe that's original and I've never seen a really perfect Corsa dash. ??? I really loved that steering wheel, flat spokes in like a brushed chrome or similar. Seats, carpet and headliner are black and are likely original, but perfect from what I saw. I really loved those seats, that have headrests (integral?), and I believe they are original and not redone. Even has an AM radio. Has nice wire wheel covers. Has an original style spare tire in the back. The doors hang, open, and close perfectly. Door fitment appears to be perfect. Glass is perfect and may be tinted (not the best lighting in the showroom on an overcast afternoon). Has (obviously) the later style padded dash and padded surround by the radio and ignition.

I don't know about the price, but this is a very nice car that will make someone a very proud owner. A very nice example of what the Corvairs were when new, or well cared for.

Dave's right - by the FTF's it is 5996. Certainly a book could be written about that particular car.

Yes, it's a very historic car. It was at the Camp Hill meeting and was owned (I think original owner) by one of Corsa's founders, Bill Garren. If I were to buy a '69, other than the ex-Bigwave 5997, it would be 5996. I saw it at the 96 convention in Williamsburg and it was a very nice car.
