Which way to turn Idle Mixture screw?
Posted by: tomkern ()

Hello All,
This is a silly question to the experienced. But, as I am a newbie, I am needing some help. My carbs seem to be a little rich due to fuel smoke and poor fuel economy. Which way do I turn my idle mixture screws to get a leaner mix?

Thanks for the help.
Tom

They would need to be screwed in (Clockwise), but if you are suffering poor fuel economy and black smoke you probably have more problems than just idle fuel. Does it smoke while driving or idling or ???

It seems to get much worse while idling. After I've been driving for a little while, when I come to a stop while in gear is when its the worst.

You might want to check that your choke plates are fully open and that the choke pull-off is working and calibrated correctly. Sometimes, if a plug is fouled or stops firing due to rich, lean, or tune-up issues, that part of the head will cool and the choke will close too. I don't think the mixture screws could add enough fuel to create black smoke.
