Corvair Mechanic in Massachusetts?

Hi Everybody,

Here's my story. Back about four years ago, my stepfather and I purchased a 1965 Monza convertible with the intention of "learning as we go", and doing a semi restoration to use it as a summer cruiser. We wanted a driver, not a show winner or anything like that, but something that we could both drive and enjoy. Well, four years and two kids later, I realize that I just don't have the time to do it, and the Monza has been sitting in the driveway ever since. Neither one of us is mechanically inclined.

We have made the decision to send the car out somewhere to have it looked over and to get her running again. Now, I'm at a loss because I don't know of any shops in the area that will take on the work. I've called around to a few places, but no luck! I know there is at least one Corvair club in the eastern Mass area, and hopefully a member will see this and perhaps help us out.

Back to the car. It was last registered in 1985 in Rhode Island, but I think at least is was stored inside. There is minimal rust but plenty of Bondo. I think the engine may have been rebuilt at some point in time, because the engine compartment is very clean. I replaced the gas tank but have not hooked it back up completely. The floorpans need to be replaced, but I have replacements. In fact, we took most of the trim off and for awhile I was looking for replacement taillights, trim, bumpers, etc.. and have a few boxes of parts.

We are just looking for someone to do some of the bodywork and get it up and running and, most importantly, get it roadworthy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

The Corsa Communique magazine lists two clubs in Massachusetts, Bay State Corvairs and Colonial Corvair Club. Here's the website for the Bay State Corvairs.

Here's the website for Colonial Corvairs.

CORSA also lists Antiquated Auto, Rehoboth, MA [508/336-3557] as the Mass specialist shop. Clarks Corvair, Shelburne Falls, MA, a superb parts vendor, might also know of others.

But you're not that far from southwestern Maine, where Ron Moller operates Maplewood Motors in Cape Neddick, ME [part of the town of York]. He's a major resource of knowledge, mechanical and drivetrain restoration and repair for ME, NH and MA enthusiasts. His phone number is 207-361-1340.

Good luck with your "new" Corvair.

You can also try Lionel Bernard of Lionel's Garage. Lionel is a retired gent and has a small shop behind his house in Worcester. He's a really nice guy and also a member of Bay State Corvairs, as well as a long time Corvair owner. You can reach him at (508) 754-2097.

Has anyone had any contact with Lionel lately since this post in 2008? I looked him up and he's 79. Don't want to call in case he isn't with us. I am in the Worcester area and I need a mechanic in my area - can anyone make a recommendation for another mechanic?
