Can old gasoline be salvaged?
Posted by: flamingchariots ()

I've seen lots of warnings about old gasoline. I'm not concerned with nasty, dark, rancid stuff. What I'm wondering about is gasoline that is 1-2 years old, and smells fine. I've used this before [ignorance], but is there an additive or remedy for using up the old stuff? Seems a shame to waste it [where can it be safely disposed of, anyway?]. Try to mix it with new?

I mix it about 50/50 with new gas, and have never had any issues with using it to power my lawnmowers (rider and walk-behind). For that matter, a gallon or two in your vehicle's gas tank is not very likely to cause any harm, particularly if added to a full tank of fresh gas.

add some octane boost and throw it in your car. even if it kills your mileage, who cares..it's "free"

I would just add it in to your fill-ups.

That's what I did with 15 gallons of gasoline/diesel mixture that I ended up with thanks to my wife.
(she has been know to call me from the gas station: "What kind of gas does this take, regular or diesel?")

Just 2 weeks ago, I used an electric fuel pump with a inline filter to get the 2 year old gas out of my Sea-Doo jet ski. It has a seperate tank for the 2-cycle oil. There must have been about 3 1/2 gallons in it. I dumped it into my 65 140 corsa convertible.. Drove it to the gas station and pumped 5 gallons of 93 octane in with it.. The car runs great but it smells like old gas when it is running.. Didn't seem to hurt the performance so far..

I had some old gas as well that was in my car. Took it out and out it in a metal contailer. I used it in the lawn morer and had problems starting it up. Also did this to the weed wacker and they never ran right.%$)_#$#!! Will never do that again.

Dump it. If you're not careful it will stick a valve in it's guide. Old gas is crap. Why take a chance?

I burned off 10 gallons of fine leaded 30 year aged rose' in my 63 a few years ago. Came out of the atomic vair. Burned quite nicely. Then again it had been sealed in a building, and smelled and appeared ok!!! While I did this ona motor I was not too concerned about, I would not recommend it with newer foul smelling stuff!

Just picked up a 77 Lincoln Mark 5 that has been sitting in storage for 8 years.
I am amazed that it still runs on the gas still in the tank. Car actually started on it and I drove it onto the trailer.
Have been leaving it run to try and burn off as much as I can, and will add premium to it.

Old gas makes a good fire ant killer. Just pour a gallon on the ant hill, let it soak in for a minute, then set it ablaze.

I'll use old gas, but like Richard, I'll just add a couple of gallons to a full tank and burn it off gradually. It's probably not going to hurt anything if you dilute it.
