For Sale ‘69 Monza with 10K Miles
Posted by: MonzaDave ()
Date: October 05, 2008 07:10PM

You may recall the lady in Wisconsin who couldn't get the trunk open on their ‘69 Monza a week or so ago. I went over and took out the headlight bucket and opened the trunk. She wants to sell the car, so I looked in over and took some pictures. The ladies name is Bonnie Bassett, her email is bonnie at tds dot net (replace at with @ and dot with .). Her phone is 608-685-3710. Bonnie lives in Alma, WI and the car is stored in Pepin, WI.

Here are my findings:

The car is a one-owner 110hp Powerglide with 10K actual miles. It's very original and very straight. However, as you'll see from the pictures, it has some defects from not being stored in a friendly environment. The VIN is 105379W705697 and a picture of the body tag is attached.

In case you can't make out the body tag numbers from the picture, they are:
ST 69 10537 WRN 381630 BDY
TR 707 59 59 PNT
05A G

The body is straight with nothing more than a few minor door dings. There are no signs of body work. The lower seams in the doors show no sign of swelling. The lower rear fender bottoms have no rust, no rust in lower front fenders, no rust around wheels wells. The rockers are solid. The places that have some rust will be described in the next post.

The undercarriage is very clean with virtually no rust, including surface rust. It appears that the car was rustproofed by the dealer with a WaxOyl type product. The bright trim is in very good condition and the only ding is in the cove trim along the engine compartment lid. Even the wheel surrounds are ding-free. The bumpers are good and are ding and dent-free. Glass is all good.. Doors open and close solidly.

The engine runs, but I didn't drive the car. The AIR smog equipment is there and intact. A picture of the engine compartment is attached. The push rod tubes need to be resealed and the right side thermostat bellows is bad.

There is rust on both corners of the windshield and along the dash next to the windshield. It doesn't appear to be bad enough to require replacement of the outside panel. There is rust in the lower section of the A pillar on the driver's side. I didn't probe it, but it appears to be through and not just on the surface.

The interior is virtually like new although the steering wheel appears to have flaking paint, or perhaps it's just dirt (my ‘69 had blue paint over a green wheel). The exterior paint is in rough shape (appears to be the result of being stored with a non-breathable cover.

Bottom line is that this is a very original car in need of some TLC and new paint. I have additional pictures for anyone interested. I'd also be willing to take more pictures or do additional evaluation for anyone who is seriously interested (the car is about an hour from me).

Contact Bonnie (see first post for contact info) for price.

Nice lady with a nice car. It's a diamond in the rough and if I didn't have two Corvair projects in process (one of them a '69 I bought new), I'd be seriously interested. You don't often find a car that has gone virtually unmolested for so long. It's a bit of archeological history.

It looks pretty solid for a WI car. I hope it finds a good home.

It was puchased new in Fort Wayne, Indiana and according to Bonnie never driven in the winter. The undercarriage supports that claim. The only problem is water-related corrosion from not being stored properly.

ignore previous message. I chatted with Bonnie, she is firm at $6000.00, originally asked $9000.00. It was her husband's toy and the furthest it has even been driven is 500 miles. Husband never drove it much over the past 40 years, and the last time it was driven was a few years ago although it is licensed now etc. They do start it up frequently.
she told me that she will let it just rot rather then selling for less than 6k.

Time will tell.

Too bad. $6K isn't likely to happen in this soft market, but rot will. Now if it was a Camaro instead of a Corvair . . .

$6K! Wow, that's on the high side. I don't understand that view, that I'd rather let it rot then sell it at market price. Maybe it's just me, but I'd much rather have my machine go to someone who really wants it, even if it's below market price. I sold my '72 Triumph Daytona a few years back, and the kid who came to see it wanted it so badly, and knew everything about the bike, but had less than 1/2 the price. He wanted to work out a payment plan to pay with his summer job. I could tell he would take good care of the bike, and that was as important to me as the price, so I sold it for about 1/2 of what it was worth. In my view nothing is worse than letting a car rot out of market spite.

Whether it is cars, houses, or anything else, I'm always a tad surprised and amused at the number of folk who insist their thing is worth more than anyone is willing to pay them for it at any point in time.

Yea, especially a car that is going to deteriorate without proper storage. And given the time value of money, she should just sell it. But she first way over-priced it ($9k), so now she probably thinks she's already dropped the price by 1/3. Hey, I want $50K for my '65 Corsa convertible, but since the stock market is collapsing I'll take half that! Such a deal.

I have seen an untold number of Vairs rot because of too high a price. On a number of occasions I had to stay in contact for years before I was able to buy it. Some I never did get and they rotted away. I never pursues anything but Vairs and I wonder if other classics are prices that way.

Well, on Ebay you see overpriced ones all the time. She thought is was more valuable for it being a 69 and the last year they made it. I can see selling for $5k or $4K at the lowest. She needs the money she said. I am sure if it has not sold in a few months, the price will drop.

Wow, this car is identical to my '69 Monza except for carpet color (mine's black).
It's sitting in the garage waiting on rust repairs, windshield and paint job. Sure glad it's garaged...
