Loosen 9/16 nut beneath dstributor cap...turn the distributor housing CCW to advance, CW to retard. Don't need to move it much to make a big difference. Do it with a timing light. PO on my 64 "did it by ear" until sounded good. Darn thing was set at 28 instead of 14 like the manual calls for! Wonder why it ran hot???

Make sure vacuum advance is disconnected and plugged.

idle rpm must be by the book to prevent centrifigal advance from affectng readings
