Exhaust for 140 w/turbo
Posted by: JerryM ()
Date: May 22, 2023 11:29AM

Some questions for those who've been-there-done-that;

What crossover pipe for 140 heads with F/B turbo?
The stock 140 exhaust manifolds and stock late turbo crossover appear to be a reasonable match with the B exhaust turbine or not the case?

With a B-flow exhaust turbine in the system are 140 heads a significant gain?

I made my own cross over the size of the 140 exhaust pipes. I have a E/B turbo and mine pulls hard most of the time. I can get boost in 1st if I really wind it out, Same with second but a bit sooner. Third really kicks in nicely and hold on..... I usually pull my foot out of it at 80'sh, don't really need to get in trouble.

Sorry, can't really answer your question for off the shelf part.

Make your own crossover, use mandrel bent, 1-1/2” tubing, and try to make a slip joint or flex pipe if you can. If you have a stock crossover, use the the 90degree bend going to the stock inlet of the turbo, and yes, use the 140 manifolds. Do your best to smooth out the ex flow as much as possible. If you have good fabrication skills, I’d up the inlet to 1-7/8”, but it’ll take some time to do this under the car, much easier if you’re doing all of this on an engine stand. Dave Kostich was making much better flowing manifolds, but he passed. I think Michael Leveque can also make you a better flowing system. But skip the stock system, way too restrictive. Go stainless on the pipes if you can, if not get them ceramic coated, or wrap the entire system, manifolds too.

What carb are you using? Definitely use the B/F turbo. Just my .02, have fun, boost is addictive!

I also have the B/F turbo and 140 heads, cam,& carbs. ( YUP, it's a blow thru system ) I did the usual carb vent mods & # 54 jets. Stock '65 slotted style linkage. The intake manifold from the turbo outlet to the carbs is a stock 140 air cleaner "spider" that I welded the pinched seams to better seal those,& welded the center mounting hole shut. Had that chromed. Used stock cork intake to carb gaskets with J bolts to secure them. I needed to rotate ( or "clock") the turbo outlet about 20 degrees to clear the intake tubes. It drains to the R/H head just fine. I put the drain tube in the same place that the 180 head has it in but I think it would have worked out better to put it into the valve cover.I have beautiful Offenhauser finned aluminum ones & didn't want to mess them up with the drain pipe. Made a custom stainless steel tube to connect the turbo outlet to the inlet tubing & an "S" shaped extension to fill the gap where the YH carb was & used the stock air cleaner.I can even still use the stock choke actuaters on the primary carbs.
I am using the 180 crossover pipe (wrapped) & muffler but am getting leaks , so I will upgrade the pipe to the larger diameter of the 140 manifolds. I'm undecided over which muffler to go with. I like the relative quietness of the stock muffler but am tempted to try a glass pac type.
The turbo comes on at about the same time the secondaries open up & its hang on time. I was getting about 20 PSI boost so I installed a good waste gate ( limiting boost to 8 to 10 PSI) & blow off BIG GRINS. This engine also delivers 20 MPG at 70 MPH.People love the looks of my engine & most of them can't figure out why it looks so insane. LOL.

The plan was to use a Weber DGV 32/36. kmart356 suggested a Mikuni HSR series carburetor - 45mm, that looks like a better way to go.

It seems priced right too, kmart356 has taken a lot of time tuning that carb and using a programmable CB black box for the ignition, he’s posted the timing map here on the forum, he can probably help you out with this setup. Have fun!

I would 100% do the Mikuni. So tunable. My 140 blow thru is working well, however, Ken has much better control of his AFR's than I do.

Or EFI

The Mikuni HSR45 can work very nicely and there are a few others that have adapted the HSR45 to our turbo engines. Not much restriction to intake flow. Send me a Pm if you have additional questions.

For reference to your original question... my engine has a wrapped OEM style exhaust crossover/turbo inlet pipe. If someone (you know who you are) would build me a large 140exhaust-style crossover we would have scalded cat performance. grinning smiley

Guys, I need to apologize for carrying on about my blow thru engine. I should have stayed on topic & hardly contributed anything to what was supposed to be discussed. It looks like I did a lot of bragging & that wasn't my intention. I'll try to be better with my responses hereafter. Doug Ward

I personally didn't mind it, and it gives additional insight on the topic.

I didn't take it as bragging Doug. Just more information about things being done with turbos.

Agree, I'm in "information sponge" mode on turbos and stuff like that fascinates me.
