Remote mirror discovered
Posted by: joelsplace ()

I was giving someone a tour and discovered my 66 A/C Corsa has a remote mirror.
I'm sure I must have known but forgot.

How could you lose track with so few Corvairs?

Everyone focuses on the fact it is a A/C equipped Corsa and you don't even notice the remote mirror. I know when I saw the car I didn't look at the mirror.

Is a remote mirror a big deal? I've got one on my 65 Monza vert. I'm restoring. And I'm thinking about not even using it.

Fairly rare in nice condition. They would self-destruct and parts the mirror head would be lying in or near the road!
An interesting option mostly 'cause they are seldom seen.

The remote mirror option is a rare and (as far as I'm concerned) a very desirable option, especially when combined with air conditioning.

There were several designs used on LM's. The first RC mirror dates into the EM's and has the notoriously fragile movable head. It was used through mid '66 when a second design was made available. This second design head assembly was also used on the '67's but with a different joystick mounting hardware. Then it was changed to a rectangular head from the previous round ones in '68, and used again in '69 but with a drain slot added to the bottom of the head.

Clark's offers a near-perfect repop (courtesy of the Camaro folks) for the '67 models as part #C10928 on page 303A. The only difference from stock GM is the number of circles on the end of the joystick and that the mounting ring clip plate needs to have its diameter reduced so that it fits under and inside the chrome mounting ring. Oddly enough, it's so perfect a reproduction that the mirror can't be cranked around enough for to allow me to see properly out of it. I have that trouble with all second design '66 through '67 remote mirrors, stock GM or reproduction. (I've had both.)

Thus there is an almost yearly redo on the mirror design after the first design was used for several years.

Some people seem to think they're a big deal. If you decide to sell yours, it might help finance your restoration.

Actually, a remote mirror is really handy in hot (if you have air) or rainy weather where you don't want to roll the window down.

Many rare accessories only add to a car's "bling" and thus command a stiff price. Just look at the Speed Warning Indicator option from the '67-9 era. I've had three of them and they are totally useless. Yet they draw big money like flies to a trash can. Go figure.

"totally useless"
I don't agree with that Mark. On my way to the tri state meet last weekend mine was previously
set at 80MPH. I heard the buzzer go off which made me realize I was speeding so I slowed down a bit
to about 70MPH. Right after that I came across a Colorado State Trooper who was (probably)
looking for people driving too fast coming down the hill.

"totally useless"

LOL.I have installed a speed minder in just about every older car I have owned.
More for the novelty of the option, but on one occasion, the one I had installed in my 69 malibu freaked me out! I had set it to 85, figured, I'd never hit that.
One day the road was open I was running late etc.... comming out of a nice straight away, the 396 was just humming though it factory dual exhaust tips. All of a sudden, "ZBZBZZTZBZBYZTZTZ!!" WTH Is THAT! I thought i had lost oil pressure, spun a bearing, sesized and alternator or something! Let my foot of the gas and checked all the gauges, everything seemed normal, then the sound went away..... Aghhh!!! Stupid Speed Minder!!! I cranked it all the way up to its limit...... never happend again. LOL
