Cars are loaded and on their wayhot smileysmileys with beer
Posted by: richard1 ()
Date: May 18, 2023 10:11AM

Yesterday we finally got the cars loaded in the container (after washing), and got the container on its way to the port in Chile on the old mountain road since there were road blocks and strikes on the normal route.

Tonight or tomorrow it will pass the border between Bolivia and Chile (620 miles away) at 14,300 ft above sea level and start the 125 mile stretch down to the port of Arica.

Booked to sale on the 25th.

How long did your Vair spend in Bolivia? I remember that you had found it there several years ago and it was the only one.

I bought it in January 2007. Finished it in 2009 (30 months). It's been parked most of the time since Covid, as we were either locked down in Bolivia, or escaped to US. Paperwork was 7 months for export.

I have regretted not going back with the tools to get the bumper. Didn't need the roof trim. I did grab the turn signal lever, just in case.

Richard,

I wish you and your family of cars a safe and uneventful trip. As for myself, I can't swim or fly, so I'm a bit nervous taking a plane or boat anywhere. I get visions of the Andrea Doria and Chrysler's Norseman show car sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic. Fortunately, such incidents are so rare as to be statistically all but impossible. Still, Ismay's words about "this ship is made of iron. Of course it can sink" is still true, and it unnerves me.

May the Lord keep you and yours safe and secure, and I hope your trip is thoroughly enjoyable and pleasant.

-Mark

Container full of cars finally got to the port in Chile today to be loaded Thursday. It spent time at the border, as the Bolivian authorities "observed" the titles, which they could have verified on line, but would only take cash as verification. So for $517 in local currency, they decided there was nothing wrong with them, and let them pass. I did not ask how high the negotiation started. It was $650 when they first notified me to get my approval to continue negotiating.

For those following, the container full of cars left Santa Cruz, Bolivia on the 17th,
Passed the border and into Chile on the 22nd,
Left Arica, Chile on the 25th, went South to Iquique, Chile,
Now is on its way further south to San Antonio, Chile (the port near Santiago). Hopefully it will then turn around and come north.

Very interesting. The dark spot on your map near Arroyito and Cordoba is the SALAR DE UYUNI salt flats where the Bolivian Landspeed Trials will be held in August. It is easy to see why it is called the largest salt flats on earth. The track will be 15 miles long and 110 feet wide...WOW!!!

Phil said, "The track will be 15 miles long and 110 feet wide...WOW!!!"

Sounds impressive, but it would mean a lot more to us Plebes, if we knew what a "Normal Land Speed Track" size is?

Around 8-12 miles depending on salt conditions at Bonneville.

This is part of the salt flats. It is miles and miles of salt a couple of inches thick floating on top of a lake. As you drive it the white basses under it and the horizon passes over you like a video game.

I've driven across it several times. The surface it like oyster crackers floating and rubbing against each other as the heat and cool throughout the day.

As a shadow starts to appear at the end, you think someone is walking, then you start thinking it is a motorcycle, then a car, then maybe a van, then you see it is a bus.

Once, although it sounds impossible, two Land Cruisers with 7 people in each, hit each other head on. No one know how because there were no survivors.

Doesn't sound too impossible to me.
Two drivers fatigued from driving on Glaring white salt all day, they probably thought they were seeing mirages.
Up until the last few seconds, that is.
If it happened at night, the rising heat off the salt, can cause some really weird light refractions.
They could have easily thought they were seeing their own headlights bouncing off those layers of warm air meets cool air.
Two Land Cruisers colliding with seven passengers each might sound far fetched here in the states, but considering how many Land Cruisers are running around your typical third-world country, it isn't so unbelievable.
Seven passengers each?
Not surprising there either, since you can get them to seat seven passengers, and I have personally seen a majority of vehicles packed to the gills in third world countries.
