Need help identifying a crankshaft
Posted by: VairLess ()
Date: May 15, 2023 06:51PM

A few months back I bought some high performance Corvair parts off a Corvair airplane guy. I just uncovered a couple more boxes and these crankshafts were in them. Ive seen the 8409 type crank before but not the other one. Does anyone recognize what it might be? Is it a aftermarket crank?

Thanks in advance

Wow, you scored on that one. Looks like one of those aftermarket cranks which could be a stroker too. You’ll need to take some measurements against the 8409 to see if it is.
I don’t know much about those cranks other than there are Chinese and American made ones and that’s about all.

WoW !
That's purty!
Looks kinda like a stock crank, that's had all the rough casting texture ground off of it.
What's the number stamped into it near the end?

It has 3000 stamped in to it. that's the only marking. Balanced maybe?

After some searching and some phone calls I think it might be a stroker 3.0 Liter billet crankshaft from SPA. I'd like to know if I can use it in my car. lol. My heads have been milled for increased compression. I'm going to message them with a myriad of questions. I'll update later.

I don't know who made it, but if it is for sale I will buy it.

I got ahold of the gent I bought it from and he confirmed it’s a Chinese forged crank. And because it’s threaded for a prop it may not be suitable for our cars due to the need for a pilot bushing. And definitely not suitable for cruising in the skies. Apparently there weren’t many Chinese cranks made but the throw was all over the map on those tested. It varied from 2.85 to 3.28 on 5 tested. Too bad, I got kind of excited.

Do those numbers vary from crank to crank, or are they that much off within one crank itself? If they aren't off too far perhaps a .030 grind would bring them to the same throw. It might suffice for a low revving torque motor.

This is a rather amusing video of "off shore" crank forging. Perhaps this crank was made here: Crank Forging Video

Interesting video, Witt.
Looks like an OSHA inspectors worst nightmare.
Judging by their precision Office Ruler measurements, and precise Sledgehammer adjustments, I am guessing the are simply producing Crank Blanks, for someone else to finish out.

Been to any forging houses in the US that do "big" work? Its not that different, surprisingly. I wonder about OSHA every single time I'm in one. I've been to too many to remember, all around the US.
