Paul,
I have a copy of CORVAIR - a Complete Guide, a 1963 special edition publication by CAR LIFE, sister magazine to ROAD & TRACK, for domestic models. In it is a road test of a 4 speed, 80hp, '60 sedan. When I first remembered it, I thought it might be one of the two test vehicles Pete wrote about above. Instead, it was a retrofit by the staff members of the magazine. They were quite pleased with the results.

"It is well known that Chevrolet's Corvair offered an all-synchromesh 4-speed transmission as an option for 1961."

"...we acquired a 4-speed assembly and had it installed on our publisher's own Corvair sedan."

"What the data and figures do not show is the tremendous improvement in the fun aspect of the Corvair, when 4 speeds are available.

"Our greatest praise for the 4-speed box goes for the improved performance it offers, the extreme quietness of the gears, and the enhanced fun of driving the car when so equipped."

Sorry, due to computer problems, I'm unable to scan the complete article for you. Maybe someone else can post a copy?

I particularly liked this comment in the closing paragraph of the article.

Craig, If you count the prototype Mrs. Monza coupe, that makes 11,928. Going further if you count the original prototype Mr. Monza (built from a body-in-white with no model designation) then the total tumbles up to 11,929!

I have always said there are a few Corvairs older than me but not many. I may need to change that to "but not many (left)". June 22, 1960

Tim, I was born during the first weeks of Corvair production (mid-August 1959). It'll never happen but I always wanted to see a 1960 COrvair with "08C" build date.

Fun article BTW.

Enjoy the Corvair! (Especially today 5/14)

NOW WITH PICTURES...
Anyone want to decode the tag. I couldn't get an engine#.

Lastly -- What's it worth. The guy won't put a price on it but said he bought it for parts (most of which won't fit on his 64 coupe. He wants to sell.

BTW, it is a 4-speed. (I could shift it through all 4-gears)

- The windshield will need replaced
- The brake pedal goes to the floor
- The carburetors have been removed and one disassembled.
- Did not try to turn the crankshaft but I think the owner said it turns.

He said it is for sale but would not give me a number. He bought it as a parts car for his 64 but none of the parts he wants will fit his 64.

Thanks!

Enjoy the Corvair!

The upholstery has held up remarkably well. My '60 had only scraps left so getting a good look at correct seats is very helpful.

The front seat is so nice I think it's been recovered. The back seat looks original.

There may be some thin spots in the floor I couldn't be sure because I didn't crawl under it. It looks pretty solid.

Enjoy the Corvair!

Car looks pretty nice but Paul you HAVE TO crawl under it to see if it has a cast iron
4 speed or an aluminum case (I doubt that). Is that a 62 instrument cluster? Ignition distributor?
I'll get the report when I see you in Wisconsin next month.

You ran it through ALL FOUR forward gears, AND REVERSE?
Or just through 4 GEAR POSITIONS?

When someone won't give me a price, it is usually because they are hoping that I will state something higher than they are thinking it is worth.
I will often counter with something like, "Well, I don't want to offend you with a price that is terribly lower than your expectations. If you tell me what you are thinking, I can let you know if I can go that high."
This sets the stage as a polite way of deflating their dreams that they own an extremely rare, and valuable million dollar car, while often getting them to let me know where they think the price should be.

Yes, I could find 4-forward gears and reverse. You'll notice in the pic of the interior that shows the shifter it's actually in reverse.

The guy is a long-time used car salesman. He's got the price negotiation thing down. Mel, I will try your approach with him. He's a nice guy and thinks this is a parts car. I don't think he paid much for it and mostly just wants it gone since none of the parts fit his 64 Monza.

Anyone want to take a crack at decoding the trim tag?

Thanks!

Enjoy the Corvair!

I've got a weird thing going for 60 700s and thought I only liked 4 doors.
I need another one like I need a hole in the head but I'm interested if you could send me contact information.
I may be wrong but those must not be 60 wheels with those hub caps and trim rings. No matter I have a 3rd set of 61 wheels that need a car to go with. I also know about a set of bowtie trim rings. I have a set of the 185/70/13 $28 tires from Wal Mart last month. Oh no my mind is racing and the next thought for what I have is a little crazy...
