1961 Floor mat pictures?

Hello everyone!

In my ongoing quest to retore my 1961 4-door, I have been trying to track down floor mats for it. I have been told that these cars didn't come with carpeting of any other floor covering except for the thin rubber floor mats that sat directly on the metal floor.

I have also been told (and experienced) that these mats are as rare as hen's teeth. Even more so for the 700 model versions, like mine, because they weren't just plain black, but were 'speckled' with the body color mixed in.

I think I have just about exhausted most avenues of finding any, be they used, NOS, repos, etc. I still need a set to restore the car to 1961 factory specs, so I think I will have to have a set custom made. The problem is, is that photos of the mats are apparently as rare as the mats themselves.

Does anyone out there have photos of 1961 4-door floor mats - plain or speckled? These can come from catalogs, archive photos, or even photos of ones in Corvairs that folks may own. Any photos will do as long as I can use them to create new mats that will be correct looking for the car.

Thanks everyone for any help you can give me!

GM installed a rubber floor covering that was color-coordinated with the body color, and it fits just like the factory carpets. You are correct that they are extremely rare to find, and next to impossible to have reproduced. I would just go with the carpet that is sold for the Monza Corvairs. Even if you found one that is NOS, it most likely will crumble int pieces as soon as you removed it from the box. They didn't last very long in the cars before they started to tear or have wear holes in them.

I have pretty much given up on any original mats at this point for exactly this reason.

This is why I am hoping someone out there has some old magazines, pictures taken of the inside floors, promo brochures, TV commercials (video), ANYTHING that has an image of what 1961 mats looked like. At least with that I can try to get something made that looks close.

I found a 70s aftermarket one a couple of years ago with jut a few small cracks. Holding up well but not driven often. Mine is low mile 500 so a carpet was out of consideration. Mine is two door so pocs wouldn't help too much.

So that's what a proper '60 700 floormat- and kick panels, and the panel below the sill trim- is supposed to look like! [Mind blown].
Nice.

Thanks for sharing Dan! thumbs up
I've heard about the rubber floor mats in the 500-700 models, but had never actually seen one in person, or even in pictures.

Wow! Thanks a ton!

Now, for the experts out there.... is an early (feb) 1961 the same (or close) to this?
