() Date: April 29, 2023 07:31PM I bought Tom's engine last year around June. I was going to put it in through the winter, but things popped up. Like getting diagnosed with lung cancer. In March they removed a tumor and it was benign. So I'm not waiting for winter again. Lifes too short. I've been driving it the last couple of weeks and made sure it had fresh gas and everything functioning properly, and now it's time. The plan is to make the engine compartment nice while the engine is out. I have two questions to start with: 1. How does the rear vent cowl come off(the piece below the back window)? 2. Remove the body tags or work around them? Stay tuned... Doug 65 Monza Cincy, OH Attachments: ![]() ![]() Re: TOMKEO Engine Install Posted by:

() Date: April 29, 2023 08:58PM The rear vent has screws and sometimes they are under the glass butyl rubber, it might be hard to remove it, don't take the body tags off as they have special rivets you don't want to disturb. ![]() ![]() 1960 4dr sedan caveman car 1961 Rampside (Chetside) 1962 Rampside (Barnside) 1962 Short Rampside (Shortside) 1962 Monza 700 Wagon 1963 Monza 900 coup (General Nader) ----------------------------------- Rust Free Lancaster Ca Re: TOMKEO Engine Install Posted by:

() Date: April 30, 2023 11:47AM If the car is a hard top, you have to mess with the chrome trim (and possibly damage the tempered glass). If the car is a soft top, you have to mess with the flat chrome strips. I suggest not removing the vent panel nor the body tags. BTW, nice looking engine and car! Re: TOMKEO Engine Install Posted by:

() Date: April 30, 2023 03:45PM Can I ask, what about this install makes you have to remove the body tags at all? And congratulations on the benign diagnosis. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/30/2023 03:46PM by playerpage. Re: TOMKEO Engine Install Posted by:

Thank you! As I've worked on the car over the years, I try to make things nice again. I've never done anything to the engine compartment. So while the engine is out I plan to sand and paint everything. I'm not a big fan of sand around something. I've already found OEM rivets for VIN so it will be coming out. And the car is a hard top. The vent panel has to come out because it's a mess in there. Car was originally white and the PO painted it red. So it's full of overspray and years of whatever. I'll sand it all down and paint it too. Thanks for the warning on the moldings. I still have my old tools from working on Mercedes. Mercedes made a very nice plastic 'shank' to remove their moldings that fit against the glass, so I'll be using it on the Corvair. ![]() Doug 65 Monza Cincy, OH Re: TOMKEO Engine Install Posted by:

Your car's come a long way since I drove down a couple years ago to buy your RM code engine case, wish I had made the same or close amount of progress as you. You can be proud of it, will be looking for it at next year's convention! Congrats on beating the big C, too! Scott Danville, In. Since my last post I found the PO hidden keys... ![]() They were underneath the rear vent, but you had to reach up through one of the openings in the engine compartment to find them. () Date: May 08, 2023 08:47PM And the engine is finally out. Not without some issues of course, but my fault this time. I forgot to bolt the Dave Motohead Engine Bracket to the engine. Thankfully it didn't thud to the floor and I had help. We some how got it down without it coming off or getting hurt. Also found the nut coming off of the RT Rear Hub. AND one loose bolt holding the transmission to the center bracket. So I'm VAIRY thankful I didn't wait till winter to do this project. Now to remove the new parts from the old engine, separate the trans/diff so they can be sent out to be gone through and resealed. I have a set of Steve Goodman rear hubs that will be going in. I bought the proper tool and with quite a bit of struggling, I got them out. Not only were the clips holding them but a lot of urethane. How does the back grille come off again? Remove the back glass to get to the screws that are under all that urethane? ![]() Doug 65 Monza Cincy, OH Re: TOMKEO Engine Install Posted by:

() Date: May 16, 2023 07:45PM I climbed into the attic and looked at an old rear grille I have. Apparently different design for different years. The one in the attic did not have a lip that would be screwed down. Looked like it fit flush. So I dug into the thick urethane hoping for an easy removal... ![]() However, I discovered mine is one that has a lip and is screwed down under the thick urethane. So tonight I dug out enough urethane to get 2 screws out and almost to the center. I'm not in a rush so I'll work on it some more hopefully tomorrow evening. ![]() Doug 65 Monza Cincy, OH Re: TOMKEO Engine Install Posted by:

() Date: May 17, 2023 06:58AM Just a minor point...butyl not urethane. Unless you have a modern one-piece seal. Modern seals are available...Zonker has one. Still takes two people to get to those screws. Attachments: ![]() Re: TOMKEO Engine Install Posted by:

Phil, where can these "modern seals" be purchased? Dean F. You are correct, it is butyl. Mercedes use to use it and I'm familiar with it. So far I'm a one man show and have gotten 2 screws out so far. I've dug this stuff out before. Mercedes used to run a copper wire in theirs, so you just need to hook a positive and negative to it and it heated right up, and you just pushed the glass out. So far I don't need to take the glass out. If I do, I'll urethane it back in most likely. Surprised it's even butyl in the first place. Mercedes used rubber seals until the late 70's. () Date: May 22, 2023 07:21PM This is why the rear cowl grille had to come off. I wasn't about to put a nice engine in the engine compartment and leave this area looking like this. ![]() Do I put an NO2 bottle in this area after I repaint it??? () Date: May 22, 2023 07:26PM I agree that you will be much happier after cleaning and painting that area. ![]() If the NO2 bottle fits the car's personality or yours for that matter, then I vote yes!
