() Date: March 16, 2023 07:07PM Now....if only they could (or would) offer a rebuild kit for existing pumps. Maybe they will consider this after a year or two once the new pumps are in a second run and they have recouped their initial investment? They could sell them for fifty dollars and I would imagine, still make a decent profit margin by offering a less expensive option while potentially saving / recycling older worn out pumps. 1962 95 F.C. () Date: March 16, 2023 08:53PM What they have to do is sell enough of these for long enough that people are confident that they really are ABSOLUTELY reliable. I have an original pump on my 1964 Monza, and so far it's still working and not leaking. If these pumps are proven to be as good as they say, I would not mind paying $94 for one since I'm not a fan of the electric pump alternative.I'd rather keep things dumb and simple. Right now, mechanical pumps seem to be unobtanium. However, it's crazy that there isn't a good quality rebuild kit available anywhere. In fact, it's ridiculous. Right! Just about a dollar more than I paid Carquest for one four years ago. I know it's more than we are used to, but if these work, with no modification, that will be a CHEAP price! Frank DuVal Fredericksburg, VA Re: Clark's New Reproduction Fuel Pumps announced Posted by:

() Date: March 16, 2023 09:19PM Just for reference: $10.00 in 1973 When Clark's was started. ($8.00 + $2.00 shipping) Is about $68.00 - 50 years later. that unassuming "tax" of inflation thru the years.... Now, Clark's is investing $$$ in reproducing the original Delco/AC fuel pump at great cost, because it's obvious that the aftermarket is a failure at keeping a viable product available. So a $2,800 1969 Convertible is equivalent to about $23,000 today. I'm pretty sure a Vairy Nice 1969 Monza convertible (521 produced) is going to sell for plenty more than that!!! It's all .....relative! Just don't ask your relatives! () Date: March 16, 2023 10:00PM From Clark's Jan. 2023 Supplement: "Clark Fuel Pump: We started with all new tooling and what we felt was the best original pump design. The diaphragm is reinforced with a finer mesh reinforcement which remains more flexible but strong. This fall (2022) we put nearly 2,000 miles on my Rampside and a stationery engine. We will back the pump with a 2 year guarantee. Fits 60-69 when used with the 1962-69 pump rod. Estimated August 2023" admin note: edited for spelling and clarity. () Date: March 16, 2023 10:02PM There was a company that did have kits available for the original Corvair mechanical pumps, however, when they ran out, it wasn't worth their investment to produce all the parts to sell kits. The rubber part is the easy part, but it is the stem that they didn't have a source for when the old source went belly up. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Woodstock CT... () Date: March 17, 2023 06:37AM I'll be buying one. I ran an original AC pump until 2021; after a few hundred miles on the freeway, I came home and the car had used no oil at all, which is not that common after a highway drive. I had a thought that the fuel pump diaphragm had ripped and was letting fuel into the crankcase (turns out it wasn't); therefore, I switched to my spare "trunk" pump, which is an Airtex from 2011 or 12. I swapped to the original spring, and it's been working fine, but it's noisy, so I look forward to trying one of these new pumps. 1965 Corvair Monza Convertible 95 4-sp. 1963 Buick Riviera 1965 Buick Skylark 1965 Ford Mustang 1965 Dodge Dart 170 Wagon 1953 Buick Special Riviera 1963 Ford Thunderbird 1974 Pontiac Firebird Esprit Re: Clark's New Reproduction Fuel Pumps announced Posted by:

() Date: March 17, 2023 11:44AM I would like to know if this new pump will have the original style umbrella? It seems to me that the umbrella would keep any leaking fuel from running down the shaft and allow it to drain out the weep hole instead of it draining into the engine. I think I had one years ago with that umbrella, but I don't know what happened to it. All the ones I have in a box full of old pumps are like the one below. I also hope they are using a softer spring as that seems to be a common problem. Attachments: ![]() ![]() Re: Clark's New Reproduction Fuel Pumps announced Posted by:

() Date: March 17, 2023 11:59AM I propose that someone on this forum (one of our gurus) buy one and do an evaluation. Initial visual/external examination, installed, measure pressure output, then tear it down and verify that all of the Corvair hive "smarts" have been incorporated into the new pump design. I bet they have. Maybe start a Go Fund Me site where we could all pitch in $5. ![]() Mike Re: Clark's New Reproduction Fuel Pumps announced Posted by:

"Umbrella" photo below. Pretty rare to see these days. ![]() Internal diaphragm leaks? I drill an extra drain hole in the pump base just in case to help drain the fuel outside the engine so hopefully you will smell the problem before it gets worse and spills down the rod hole and into the engine. Not sure about being a guru but I have an order placed for when they are ready to ship. I already planned to be nosey and peek inside to check compatibility with my adjustable pump pressure mod. So many versions of the bases have come and gone! Also, a quick comparison photo below of the two rod lengths you'll find. () Date: March 17, 2023 05:01PM I was thinking that I've seen bases without the tower casting around the center hole? Without the tower it is like a funnel for gas to run into the engine. RJ tools Salem,Oregon ![]() Re: Clark's New Reproduction Fuel Pumps announced Posted by:

() Date: March 18, 2023 08:07AM I tried finding information on tapered spring pressures to no avail. I tried measuring the difference between an AC spring giving 4.5#s of pressure and a Precision (Airtex?) spring giving 9 #s of pressure and found them to be pretty much identical. Maybe I'm just not that good at it or my measuring is too crude. Taking an aftermarket spring and cutting a full coil off is A LOT in my view. I'm happy to spend $100 on one to support their efforts. It's very expensive to install an EFP with safety measures and all. Jim Brandberg Isanti, MN CorvairRepair.com ![]() Re: Clark's New Reproduction Fuel Pumps announced Posted by:

() Date: March 18, 2023 08:58AM Looks to me as though the umbrella would pump fuel down the shaft just like the old umbrella valve seals used to do. Re: Clark's New Reproduction Fuel Pumps announce Posted by:

() Date: March 18, 2023 03:32PM Seems like there is sufficient anticipation of this product debut in the Corvair community that Clark’s might be willing to “loan” a prototype to a recognized expert on this forum to do a review on it. Someone who knows the best features and failure modes with all of the different variations of this pump through the years. Perhaps they had a few of you contribute to the effort already? Springs are pretty complex things, for something that appears so simple. Wire diameter, The temper in the metal, the number of coils, tightness of the turns, and I am sure there are even more factors I don't even know, that affect the rating of said spring. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: Clark's New Reproduction Fuel Pumps announced Posted by:

() Date: March 19, 2023 04:59AM I have corresponded with Cal Clark at length about producing a rebuild kit. The basic problem is precisely that there are SO MANY different types of reproductions over the past 50+ years that there is no guarantee a rebuild kit would perform flawlessly in all of them. Say, for instance, they sold a rebuild kit that was properly designed and manufactured for use in original AC pumps but somebody installed it in one of the later, and improperly made, aftermarket pumps - say, one with poorly machined castings. That rebuild would likely fail, due to the poor castings, but the purchaser would complain that the rebuild kit was no good. As Clarks has no way to control how the kits would be used, they would be open to this type of criticism. I now understand their reluctance to provide rebuild kits.
