ARP Rod Bolt Torquing in the engine case
Posted by: John Luscinski ()

Assembling rods to crank and I am having an issue with trying to get at the spline type nuts that come with the ARP bolts. I have the spline type socket that fits them but the socket is a 3/8 type. I tried using socket adapter to go from 1/2 drive to 3/8 but I cant swing or get my torque wrench in there. To long with the adapters on it and I dont like using adapters on torque wrenchs.. I could go an find a torque wrench with a 3/8 drive ft/lbs somewhere..

Another question do we torque them wet or dry? What about using loctite on them?
Anyone have suggestions?

I have a set of Craftsman 1/4-In Drive Universal Sockets. They work fine with a short 1" extension and adapter for the torque wrench. My torque wrench is 3/8 drive.

Adapters that lengthen the setup are no isse with torque application. It is those adpters that move the toque off the center point of the torque wrench that need recalculation of torque.

I have a 3/8 beam style and 3/8 12 point. Not thrilled with the setup but it works. (I double checked the calibration on it and to get 360inlbs I had to go to 400inlbs on the torque wrench indicator!)

I would love to see someone's setup that works well and is an accurate torque wrench that is not a beam style.

Mine is a clicker type. Had it checked at Gulfstream and still on point at each end and center. But it is a good one made for the military in the 70s.

When you say splined nuts, I assume you mean the 12 point 3/8 size nuts that come with the bolts. The 5/16 ARP rod bolts torque to 30 ft lbs with the ARP lube. Whoever resized the connecting rods should have included a note specifying this critical information for you so that was bad on them. You need to know what specific lube and the torque the machinist used when they resized the rods and if they checked the stretch. I have found that an accurate 30 ft lbs with the ARP lube does stretch the bolt the required length but you still need to inquire as to what the machinist did before you proceed.

And, Do not use Loctite – just the ARP lube. Ideally you need to use a 3/8 drive small head torque wrench with the short socket to fit inside the engine.

I use a small head 3/8 drive clicker type torque wrench that is calibrated, I actually have a Calibration checker that is accurate and a stretch gauge, I have found to get proper stretch according to the ARP chart that 32 ft lbs is the magic number, the 30 ft lb number given in the chart is the suggested generic non stretch gauge number, but repeated tries I have found 32 ft lbs to be the magic number with the ARP torque lube provided with the bolts.
Also there is a vid on you tube using different types of lubes and the ARP torque lube is really a good formulation to reach consistent repeatable proper torque values, Here is a link > [youtu.be]

Dave, is yours a modern torque wrench brand? Make and model?

Looking for one that I know will fit.

Mine is a old craftsman that I have had for years back when they made quality stuff, I calibrate it and only use it for rod bolts, I use other torque wrenches for everything else.

Never torqued rod bolts, but I have an old (1980's) Snap-On 3/8" drive click torque wrench that I think would work. Think that is what my Corvair mechanic at the time used (most all his tools were Snap-On).

Do not know what Snap-On offers at this time?

Mine is the old Craftsman 3/8" beam type from the 70s? Maybe early 80s.

What went wrong to get a beam type out of calibration? Metal changing characteristics? You couldn't leave the spring tight like in clicker types.winking smiley I've had to have clicker types calibrated, but the beam ones are fine when checked at full scale.

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions on this. I was able to purchase a 3/8 torque wrench and using Dave's suggestion on the specific valuse. Also I have been using his reproduction to the engine cradle and it worked favorably for me. So all cylinders are in. Waiting for powder coated parts to come. Then the cylinder heads will be on soon. Wish I could post some pictures on here..

I use both types ,in 3/8" drive
I have a older Craftsman bean type that fits just fine with a 3/8 12 point socket for the ARP nuts.
I actually use it to check my click type .
Dave is correct, 32 lb-ft with AP lube on the threads, AND under the nut

From a phone, I have no clue - though if I send a photo on my phone via email, it asks me if I want to resize it.

Windows / Outlook: Right click file; select "Send to Mail Recipient".

A resized photo is attached to an email. Open photo in email and save it under a different file name.

Then, you can attach that photo to a post here.

I have been saying that for years, very simple, works every time yet some folks continue to over think it
