California corvair brackets
Posted by: Erics67 ()

Hello all

I just purchased caliper brackets from California Corvair. The ad says they're for S10 rotors and GM metric calipers.

I was under the impression that "GM metric caliper" referred to the 3rdgen, G-body, 2wd S10 caliper, that take 154 pads.

The instructions, though, say to use an 88-92 Delta 88 caliper.

I guess all of their calipers are technically metric.

Has anybody here used these brackets? I don't want a low drag caliper on my straight bore master cylinder. Can I use the S10 calipers? Are there aftermarket calipers in the other size?

Just curious if anyone else has tried. Probably not, but worth asking.

Thanks, Eric

These are questions worth asking Jeff W. I am sure he has sold many of these kits thru the years.

"I have them on my 65. no issues"

Have what? The Delta 88 or g-body style?

What kind of pedal height do you have?

The innerweb led me to believe that the GM Metric caliper is universal design that fits many GM cars.

In addition, there seems to be more than a few race car sanctioning bodies that have embedded this caliper into their rules. As a result, the aftermarket for GM Metric calipers is plentiful with varying piston diameters (2.38" is what Corviar needs) and even 2 piston configurations. (For kicks, try searching "GM Metric" on summitracing.com). Best I can tell, they are all sliding types.

I am no expert, though. Best to double check.

"The innerweb led me to believe that the GM Metric caliper is universal design that fits many GM cars."

I too thought that.To me GM metric means a 154 pad.

But the caliper listed here and by davemotohead is a different caliper. Body and bolt center. As far as I can tell, all low drag calipers and no aftermarket.

The Wilwood website has drawings of their calipers, including their versions of the GM Metric. (The link below is to one of their GM Metric iron caliper datasheet). Compare their pin bolt spacing the brackets you have.

Methinks the Delta 88 Calipers are not GM Metric, at least not the ones I was thinking of. If the picture on the Summit Racing website is accurate (see below), these are not the same style as the GM Metric I used (with Scarebird brackets).

The mystery continues

I have this kit on my yellow Corsa, this is the first design (Old) disc brake kit, I bought low mile used rotors from my junk yard back when they would let you pick and pull, spacers are required behind the bracket to line the calipers up correctly, you need to machine the hub outside diameter both on the outer flange and inner hub flange to get the rotors to fit, you need longer wheel studs, if you have 66-69 spindles with the bigger top bolt you need to shave the bolt head down to clear the rotor, Also, I found I needed to trim the lip at the top A-Arm as the Caliper would hit it in turns or going backwards and the brakes would not work, this was standard practice with this older design kit, once everything is done correctly they stop great, I was going to switch to the dual manual master cylinder but they seemed to stop fine with the stock single master, I will eventually change to the dual master.

Who is Jeff?

davemotohead - Thanks for the response. Those reman calipers in your pick are low drag calipers. I would like to avoid them as the make a lower pedal and I also wanted to try a smaller master. Some people band-aid them with residual pressure valves, but that sounds like bad idea to me.

There might be an aftermarket caliper that bolts in it's place, but I don't know how to find it. Trying to find a different bracket.

Mine stops great with good pedal, David Clemens makes the best kit out there, he will sell you just the brackets or the entire kit, get ahold of him and buy a kit from him, I own a couple of those as well and a very good product.

davemotohead - Does David Clemens have website?

Not getting an answer or email response from Calif Corvairs.

Levair Performance says their takes the correct caliper, but there are no images. Have you ever heard of anyone using them?

Thanks, Eric

Just for grins I looked up 1988 to 1992 Olds 88 Pads, and the 88 88 (boy , is that confusing!) try again, the 1988 88 pad is a 215 and the 1992 88 pad is a 505.

Raybestos says the change is between 1990 (215) and 1991 (505).
