Corvair Head DWG or STL file

Does anyone have detailed drawings or better yet a DWG or STL file for the Corvair Head?

The reason is that I can reasonably cast a single head similar to Aircraft engines and this would also allow for easy repair in case of a dropped valve seat, etc. My vision would be to take a cross-country trip with a couple of spare single heads in the trunk. Also, it would be able to take any intake that can be made for it and I would cast mine for EFI injector bungs.

The other reason is to take advantage of head technology that was not available in the 50s when these heads were designed. I'm looking at the LSx head, but I am a long way from even starting... this is more of a fishing expedition.

The proposed would be a printed Lost PLA format and use a Miffle oven, etc to burn the PLA out and then cast it with high temp plaster as a refractor. Realistically this is a three-year project but could really take a big step if someone had an STL or DWG file.

Crazy as Hell in SC,

Ted

Hopefully someone will step up who has already done the 3D modeling.

But...is there anyone in your area that does 3D scanning? Maybe you could drop a head off and have it scanned? I know now there are even apps you can put on your phone that will 3D scan and some of them are actually pretty accurate.

Matt, I did not know those existed; cool stuff. Hopefully some of the ways out there are doable to convert either of those file types to stl or dwg.

Those files are a great reference for sure, but I don't think any of them will be able to be "converted" into anything more than they are. One could possibly trace all the line segments to isolate the important parts, but that is a lot of manual work. I would think it would be better to start from scratch or a 3D scan.
Here is what one of the dxf files look like opened in Autocad.

Hi Ted, you have begun a big job. I am not an engineer at all but I don't understand why one could not just band saw a stock head apart so it becomes 3 pieces. Each cylinder would still have 4 head bolts (studs) & be able to torque each one down individually . Then mill off the intake manifold & offer different bolt on carburetor or injector manifolds. Heck, you could even build a 2 or 4 cylinder engine from these components. Use the stock crankcase halves, block off the unused cylinder holes & let the unused rod journals go ahead & spin. ( talk about a smooth running 2 cylinder opposed engine.
Please don't laugh too hard at me, as I am pretty sold on the idea. I DO get a brain fart once in a while & this is probably a good example of one.
Carry on.

Doug, I think that's kind of the idea, so you're in the ballpark in your thinking at least.

Doug, I think the idea is to build an IMPROVED head design. cool smiley
Both from a Flow perspective, and an efficient combustion chamber designed for our modern fuels. thumbs up

I have often thought of finding a way to use 6 of the heads from my Honda 500 thumper, nearly the same bore. Lots of breathing.

One company that did just that was called UltraVair, and made 2 cylinder Ultralight aircraft engines out of Corvair engines. Have one in the garage that may someday power my Monza Jr.

Ted,

Great project. Look forward to end product.

Will the foam casting process reproduce a fine surface that would only require minimal finish machine work and do you intend to provide the heads finished machined for combustion chamber and intake pad surface finished and ready for valve installation?

Do you intend to install seats and guides?
